Is your corwoker new to DC and from a super small town?  It never occured me to not wear jewelry on metro and I ride it all over and live in a transitioning neighborhood.

OP again.  She's from an NYC suburb and has lived in DC for a long time.

I'm from NY and was definitely careful about flashing my engagement ring on the subway there. I still wore it but tried to keep it inconspicuous depending which line I was riding/time of day. Here I commute on the metro daily and have never given a thought to hiding or removing my ring. [/quote]
