Sometimes, but not always caused by abuse. I think the diagnosis probably includes several conditions that will ultimately be recognized as different. The key feature seems to be emotional dysregulation. |
"Character" is psychological jargon for personality. |

Huh. I just spent like 2 hours reading about BPD, and it describes a highly manipulative, angry, lying, often abusive sibling of mine. It explains everything and nothing at the same time. I don't know if they've been diagnosed with anything, and I realize everyone likes to apply an armchair diagnosis on the internet, but I know they've had run-ins with many therapists over the years for behavior issues. They're also financially successful and married, which people tend to not associate with personality disorders. But damn if it doesn't totally describe this sibling.
They're not in my life anymore, thankfully. Some time ago I plain refused to be on the receiving end of their outbursts and manipulations. But admittedly, sometimes it still hurts. |
I didn't know that. Thanks for explaining. |
| Most of the people you are describing are either just mean and manipulative or possibly bipolar but BPD is specific to abuse which causes the behavior. Not just a mean manipulative and out of control b**<£ |
Hard to do the armchair psychiatry. But typically BPD people are not very successful in life because they are just too dysfunctional, e.g. myriad suicide attempts. A personality disorder that can be high achieving in a worldly way, however, is the narcissistic personality type. You might google that one and see if it fits even better. I think armchair psychiatry is perfectly fine if you are entering it in the spirit of helping you to understand someone better. |
No it is not specific to abuse. Yes, some borderlines were abused, but not all. |
|
| Can someone describe briefly what BPD really is? I don't want to spend 2 hours on Google like a PP.... |
Just go to Wikipedia. It will take all of 5 minutes. |
|
Hmm. I've been told I have BPD, and I've never been abused.
I really did have a problem believing this diagnosis. Since then I have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder which seems to.. fit?.. better. Too many people self or even worse diagnose via google. |
I don't think this is always true. |
Shrinks played around with BPD for one of my DC. But in the end it was just anxiety. There are many instances of people with bipolar being misdiagnosed as borderline and vice versa. Medication does not help BPD (it can help comorbid disorders they may have like anxiety or depression), but it does help bipolar. As a parent trying to figure out what is going on and the best way to approach it, I've spent a lot of time on google. This isn't really to diagnose but to narrow down the diagnosis in order to narrow down the search for possible appropriate mental health providers. You want one who has the skills to address the possible range of problems. If your child has possible borderline, you don't want to waste time with a psychiatrist who is specialized in depression and doesn't deal with borderline, for example. Also, I bought some books aimed at family members of borderlines like Walking on Eggshells and found that the suggestions given for dealing with someone with this disorder were also very effective in dealing with my child and her anxiety. Another reason to spend a lot of time on google is to reality check a diagnosis the mental health providers come up with. Psychiatry is more art than science--there are almost never blood tests or other objective signs for mental illnesses. And since providers tend to take special interests in a limited range of disorders there is the risk of everything looking like a nail to the hammer. My child's psychiatrist, for example, was convinced she had somatoform disorder in addition to anxiety. I was not convinced and challenged it so the psychiatrist would not write it down anywhere; as they say somatoform, is the last diagnosis you will ever have because any medical problem after that will be chalked up to a mental health disorder. As it turns out, my child has a progressive and painful autoimmune disease. |
| Can anyone recommend some resources for family members of people with Borderline PD? Books? Websites? Are there support groups? |
