| If interested in business and/or journalism, might also want to check out Indiana - top-ranked programs in both those areas. |
Mizzou has the best j-school in the Midwest and one of the top j-schools in the country. |
Me too. Oddly, many of my DC friends also attended UW - though we didn't know each other in college. Great alum network, lots of fun, smart ambitious students. It's a great school. |
I don't see this as the PP being a smart ass. It just looks like s/he is listing the rest of the UW schools that the first post missed. Calm your tits already |
But their b-school isn't as good. IU and Northwestern are highly rated in both areas. |
If it isn't stated, it is madison. |
To my surprise, Wisconsin is the only school of significance to be listed among the 100 Safest Colleges in the US based on statistical analysis of official government crime data for 6,696 colleges and universities in America: http://www.american-school-search.com/colleges/safest I'm surprised because Wisconsin has a reputation for active social life and a very big Greek system. |
| Great school, great town, great sports. A no brainer to go there in-state and a very solid choice for an out of state student if your state doesn't have its own good state school. The only drawback is that the student population is huge--you'll need to find your niche. |
Off topic but what is this saying? Lived in RIC for a brief time and I definitely thought it was behind the times. Is the saying that RIC is 100 yrs behind the times compared to DC or something else? |
| If DS/DD wants to do business or journalism, both are fields that very much require resume building and internships. Do those kinds of chances exist in/around Madison? I'd imagine yes but it's something to think about that many don't; sure he/she can do summer internships in DC or other cities, but anything they can do to build the resume a bit during the school yr will only help them moving forward. |
Few students do internships in the same city as their college (unless the college is in a major city) |
Right -- which is why it's a plus if you can do it; while others may be in isolated Happy Valley with only 2 summer internships on the resume, you could be someplace with 2 summers plus 2 additional semester long work experiences. Hiring is competitive and every little bit helps. I'm not suggesting that you have to be in school in NYC or DC to do this. For a j-major -- I'd look to whether there are local newspapers, tv/radio stations etc. (beyond the campus affiliated ones) either in Madison or in driving range where DS/DD could get a small gig. For a business major -- I'd look to see what local companies were around. My sense is that Madison isn't isolated so some opportunities may exist/may be created. |
| Met a few UW grads who were pretty racist. It's a very lilly white school. Also a lot of Euro ancestry that influences thinking. |
Wisconsin racist? Not very likely. The school is among the most progressive, but there are some in every crowd so it's possible that a few of the 40,000 are racist. Euro ancestry is pretty common in this country, if you haven't noticed. |
Lots of internships for students. Madison is the state capital so many government jobs, law firms, lobbying, associations. There are also many research opportunities with all the grad schools. Many hospitals and tech startups. Epic Software is a big employer in the area and even Google and Microsoft have offices. Lots of news stations, Madison magazine, and online and newspapers. |
