If DS/DD wants to do business or journalism, both are fields that very much require resume building and internships. Do those kinds of chances exist in/around Madison? I'd imagine yes but it's something to think about that many don't; sure he/she can do summer internships in DC or other cities, but anything they can do to build the resume a bit during the school yr will only help them moving forward.
Few students do internships in the same city as their college (unless the college is in a major city)
Right -- which is why it's a plus if you can do it; while others may be in isolated Happy Valley with only 2 summer internships on the resume, you could be someplace with 2 summers plus 2 additional semester long work experiences. Hiring is competitive and every little bit helps. I'm not suggesting that you have to be in school in NYC or DC to do this. For a j-major -- I'd look to whether there are local newspapers, tv/radio stations etc. (beyond the campus affiliated ones) either in Madison or in driving range where DS/DD could get a small gig. For a business major -- I'd look to see what local companies were around. My sense is that Madison isn't isolated so some opportunities may exist/may be created.
