Staying at a friend' beach house

Use it as a temporary safe house for the drug cartel then impress them with a couple 1st class tickets to Rio. Win-win!

Also, beach towels and other stuff that can be used at the house are always welcome!

People are offering up cleaning or paying to clean as a "thank you?" IT IS A FREE VACATION!!! THAT SHOULD BE A NO-BRAINER! Who would NOT clean or have someone's place cleaned after they stayed there for FREE??? HONESTLY!!! I would stock their pantry, get a VERY nice gift basket (depending on the next time they were using the house), would definitely give a very generous gift card to their favorite restaurant in town.

Seriously - depending on where this house is, look on VRBO.com the house could command anywhere from 2k-10k a week (OR MORE) depending on location, number of bedrooms, baths, etc. Your are very lucky to have such nice friends. Think out of the box. Once again your friends are being super generous and this calls for more than simply cleaning their house or paying for a cleaning service or a bottle of wine.

How much would this vacation cost your family if you didn't have this "free house" to use? Think of it that way and plan your gift appropriately.

That's a little over the top and I would actually be uncomfortable if I'd offered our house and people felt compelled to give lavish gifts. I frankly would be happy with them covering the cleaning plus a nice hostess gift.

I don't want people "stocking the pantry". Replacing stuff is of course great (and preferably with the same or comparable brand - don't buy cheap paper towels if we had Bounty). But sometimes people leave odd things that we don't eat and we have to give it to the food pantry.

I think it would be nice if you left a little basket with thoughtful gift. A puzzle, maybe a board game your family likes, candles in a beach theme, that kind of thing.
