which is "healthier" as a dessert: chips or cookies?

homemade cookies with a lot of nuts in them

Seaweed is salty and has protein and fiber.

There have been some great responses here to healthy snacks/desserts. I just want to throw in that nuts should actually be eaten sparingly and not over-consumed as they contain a LOT of fat. Too much isn't good

The fat in nuts is EXTREMELY healthy, especially for growing kids. Carbs and sugar are what make us fat. You can't really "over-consume" nuts, unless they are like, all you eat.

- trail mix
- kale chips (also a busy working mom and I make these in 10 minutes and my kids DESTROY them instantly in any snack or lunch situation)
- something like date bars that's sweet but healthy
- black bean brownies (also easy and fast to cook, and loaded with protein)
- sugar snap peas

These are all things DD and DS love and will eat as a snack (and sometimes as dessert). Most of the processed stuff you can buy is garbage and most of the "good" unprocessed stuff is expensive, so I set aside like 20 minutes to whip something up on Sunday that will last the week.

NP. I'm kitchen-challenged. Do you have links to make the kale chips and/or the black bean brownies? Thanks!

Sure, I don't really use a recipe for kale chips, but here is a good one:

Kale chips: http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2010/03/baked-kale-chips/ (I use regular kale, not dino kale, but both are great -- regular kale takes LESS TIME so don't bake for 20 minutes! It only needs about 10 when I do it)

Black bean brownies: http://thehairpin.com/2014/03/the-disgustingly-good-black-bean-brownies (it says to use rice flour but I just use regular flour or ground up oats)

My kids LOVE the roasted seaweed that comes in the little packets--We get a bale of them at Costco, but I've seen them all over. I've also seen kale chips at Trader Joe's--it seems like not much bang for your buck, but it's a great time saver. Also, the dry-roasted edamame and chickpeas are really, really good--salty and crunchy. Mine also like the plaintain chips from TJs, Larabars, popcorn (any kind, any flavor, in any form), and pretty much any kind of freeze-dried fruit. Also, Veggie Booty. I figure it's all still sort of junky, but we just try and balance it out with other stuff. Good luck!

I wonder what would happen if i threw in a jello pudding one day. Messier (they are young, messy eaters), but healthier?
Thanks in advance.

-Apple sauce and a few animal crackers.
-Grapes, strawberries, blueberries and clementines are always great.
-pretzels, pirate bouty or goldfish.
-carrots and hummus.
-pita chips and hummus
-homemade mini muffins

Do you make the date bars or do you buy them? Just curious since my kids love dates!

Um no. Sugar free fat free pudding will have tons of fake sugar in it - which you do not want to give to your kids.

Is it really safe to give young kids nuts?

Explain to me the difference between pretzels, pirate booty, goldfish, and pita chips to chips? I'm fine with any of those choices, including chips, I just don't really see the difference. And comparing the goldfish box and the bag of tortilla chips - nutritionally there isn't much. One has more fat, the other more sodium.
