Actually I don't think there are really bad medical schools. They are a restricted resource in this country and they all tend to be OK, at least the ones in the US. The school a surgeon went to is way, way less important than their experience and reputation. I have researched surgeons for bypass surgery for a loved one by asking several experts in the field. Never once did I ask which school they went to (which would have been decades ago).I suspect that the best in this area did not go to Harvard, Yale wherever.

You never have to explain how smart you are if you went to an elite Ivy. There are some just as smart kids at UMD, but they will have to prove it to people.

Of course, I'm sure there are. But when looking for a doctor, I look at things TRACK RECORD...reputation, etc. If I hear several people died at a doctor's hands, I will not be giving him a call whether he graduated from a 'good' medical school or not.

Most of my doctors have come from referrals from others. I was told they're good...great...awesome...etc. And never once did I ask "Where'd he go to school".

It was missed . The point being that an ivy degree means not having to prove yourself or your intellect. It's assumed.

A non-ivy may be just as smart but his intelligence will not be assumed. He will have to prove it .

Agreed that it's assumed. It's just not always assumed correctly, either by the Ivy grad or by the person the Ivy grad is dealing with.

DCUM always amuses me. Many posters seem to think the only reason someone would send their kids to a Big 3 is to get into a Ivy. And now some are concerned that going to an Ivy doesn't automatically lead to earning more than others.

If a student is fortunate enough to go to a school with outstanding teaching and resources, and smart enough to make the most of these opportunities, then they will benefit throughout their life. It isn't always about money or prestige. Education enriches life.

That being said there are many excellent colleges and universities that offer wonderful educational oportunties.
