Mine did too. And really hasn't felt that much pressure. Its no worse than I remember my high school. |

I think only the magnet IB program in RM difficult. Rest of these schools you can choose to take the AP course you want to take and there is no minimum like you need for the IB diploma.
Even schools that offer IB (BCC?) - you can choose to take IB course a la carte - so you do not have to fulfill the IB diploma requirement. I am assuming that this holds true for the magnet programs at Poolsville and Blair as well. |

In terms of actual difficulty, pease remember that the curriculum is the same. of course the cohort is different and the teachers may be able to teach at an overall higher level, but if your child takes nonAP, non honors courses, they won't be more difficult.
As for the pressure cooker atmosphere, that's another story!! |
We chose to not live in W district on purpose. Yes, every school has its issue, but it seems that at these wealthy schools, there is a lot more drugs since most of the kids have $, and the parents just bail them out. I feel like "affluenza" is prevalent here. read the thread on the US/News World report Best High school ranking. there are postings about these W schools and the issues there. I know a few people that went to Wootton. They hated it because of the cliques and conceited attitude. Of course, there are issues at the non-W schools like fighting and such, but at least at those schools, the kids don't usually get bailed out by their parents. So, there at least, kids are being punished and not getting away with bad behavior as much. RM has various SES students, and it is quite large. I know a parent whose son goes there. He said there are groups for any type of person; it's easier to find "your people" in that school. And there are lots of kids there that take AP but there are a fair number of kids that don't. Your DC will be able to find a group to fit in both socially and academically in these larger non-W schools. |

Every school has issues.
I find that Wootton, Whitman and (only recently) Churchill have the most "social issues". You missed Wj on your list. I would say WJ, BCC and QO have less social issues. RM is hard to describe as is all the magnet schools. You really have to go to the school and check it out. I grew up going to RM "back in the day" I lived in the "bad neighborhood" so my opinion may be biased. I work with kids in the schools in this area and that is oh I see it. |
You sound very insecure and jealous. The W schools are big enough that kids with diverse interests find their place or people. They just have better academics and fewer kids engaging in misconduct. Did you read about the 18 year old sophomore at RM arrested for having sex in a hallway with a 14-year-old? Oy vey. |
I don't understand why every negative opinion someone has about something means they are insecure or jealous. Are you insecure/jealous of people that have things that you don't care about? You sound ignorant. Not everyone wants what you want or thinks what you think - thank god. Yes I heard about the sex at RM. You think kids at W schools aren't have sex? Probably in your house, maybe on your bed? The W schools have kids that engage in lots of misconduct. They just don't get caught as much b/c parents are probably gone a lot or bailed out so it's under-reported. |

This whole area is a pressure cooker. If my husband's company wasn't based on government jobs, we would leave here in a heartbeat. The keeping up with the Jonses vs non English speaking. Such a strange place and school environment. That said, we have family in many other states with kids in high school and they also take AP classes - when they are ready. Parents around here push and want Ivy for their kids and deny them a normal childhood. Sports, music and set schedules all week and weekend long starting at the age of 3 Hours of homework. No time to just be a kid. Heck, playdates are scheduled by parents. Every week of summer planned. You can't even play with the friends you want on your time. Can't leave helicopter tiger mom for one second to ride bikes in the neighborhood. This is not normal. This is not what the rest of the country does but for a few affluent urban areas. Planning your child's day, week, year, and life is NOT healthy for anyone.

I just think you're totally full of crap and do an exceptionally poor job of masking your resentment. These complaints only surface when someone else's school is acknowledged for its desirability or excellence. Grow up. |

RM is 20% Magnet and a lot of problem kids. Like a PP mentioned there was an 18yr old in 10th grade. WTH?? He had sex in the middle of a hallway with a 14yr old during school. That should not and does not happen. My child is in middle school. She will be 13 when she enters as a Freshman. I do not want her around 20-21yr old creepers like this.
Sorry, this is not normal. IB can only cover up a problem school so much. |
I don't think you know much about what goes on in high schools. |
Did you hear about the Churchill kid that overdosed and had crack and guns. Or the suicide this week in another W school? |
Post links please |
You are right. I forgot it is normal to be 18 and a sophomore. |
| I really don't think this RM incident can be used to rate the school. While not perfect, I think the US News criteria are a bit better than-two kids had sex during the school day so it is a bad school. The only stats PP can post is 20% magnet and 1 (ok 2) problem kids I am more interested to know if the student is back at RM... |
