I am also concerned about this. Can anyone recommend a dentist who will remove wisdom teeth with only novocaine? |
That sounds unbearable. Allow the twilight sleep. Millions do it yearly with no problem. |
Okay, but it's just not always necessary. I'm 40 and I just had two wisdom teeth pulled with regular old novocaine. They way they talked about the options (really pushing the nitrous and/or the anesthesia) made me really scared ahead of time, because they made it seem like I would *really* suffer without it. The main reason I said no is because I didn't want to spend the money on it, and I thought that I would probably be okay despite their warnings. It was really no big deal. There was no pain at all. Yes, there was some pulling and for about 3 seconds, a really gross wrenching feeling. But no pain, and then it was over. Your kid can get through this, find a dentist who isn't going to scare the crap out of her in the process of trying to sell her medication that isn't really necessary. |
It really depends on your pain threshold. I have none and novacaine would never have sufficed for me. |
+1 It also depends on the severity of the teeth. If they're impacted, no way would I go with just novacaine. It actually turns my stomach just thinking about it (I had four removed, two were impacted). |
| I had two non impacted wisdom teeth removed (at separate times) and the removal was quick and not painful. But for four at once or if they are impacted, I would consider twilight. |
|
All 4 removed in one visit in (I believe) 1997: 2 impacted, just novocaine. I have/had a very high pain threshold, never even filled the painkillers they sent me home with, and if memory serves I was out that night.
I can still remember hearing the cracking/breaking and the sound of the tooth coming out and for that reason I'd opt for the twilight sleep if I had to do it again. |
| * by "out that night" I mean hanging out with friends at a rock show, not out like not conscious. |

Is your child an anxious person or have specific anxiety with the procedure?
We have recently had four dental experiences. (3 20-14; 1 Husband so doesn't count) 20 y/o Sister- not usually anxious, but it was intense. 4 wisdom teeth. She was given Versed. Also local(s). No problems. 16 y/o Brother-major drama over the IV; I asked if the surgeon would try nitrous, then we could get the IV going. 3 minutes later, bro was fine, dentist began locals. First 3 teeth were done easily and quickly. 4th, major issues but the surgeon and assistant talked my brother through it. Stronger dude than I'd of been. 14 y/o Sister- She had a mess. Not wisdom teeth procedure. Only the third time she'd been to the dentist. (2nd time was only a brief consult) We went into that with the certainty of IV sedation. I believe she was given Fentanyl and Versed. No problems. --None of them are particularly concerned over the procedure(s). (Except husband, who also had IV sedation) I would stress, though, if there is anxiety, do the IV meds. ---Only 14 y/o sis was done in MD. Husband's mouth met an ED and on call oral surgeon while cross country skiing a few months ago. The bill and quality of work led us back to the oral surgeon. We are still shocked at the price especially compared to the one done in MD. |
Bumping this up to ask a question... what does the bolded part mean?? |
