why would you say that? I was going through their website (PTA) and they do have variety of PTA after school programs. Are they missing any interesting program? How about parents? Do they volunteer to help out PTA program? |
Per the community's request, FCPS was going to make Lemon Road a center, not Westbriar. But some Westbriar families did not want their kids attending AAP at that school in that area. So at the last moment, Westbriar was put forward as an AAP, with a guarantee that its renovations would be fast-tracked. There is no way the majority of the "community" favored this change. Neighbors are constantly complaining about it right now do to traffic and other hassles. And parents of students there aren't too excited by the fact that they're aren't enough bathrooms for the kids. Poor, rushed planning to appease the egos of some involved with Westbriar. |
Hardly. Is it ever put to a vote? No. The School Board simply acquiesces to the loudest voices, over and over again, regardless of what most parents would prefer. |
The community is the school community, which involves the principal, the teachers, the staff, and the parents in the community. It has absolutely nothing to do with the School Board. |
Lemon Road was also made an AAP center in addition to Westbriar. |
I have no idea as I am not part of the Westbriar community. I do know that schools are made into AAP Centers at the request of the community, and that community is led by the school principal. If there were parents that did not want AAP at Westbriar, I do hope they made their opinions known to the school principal. See Level IV Center School-Level Program Review Process: http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/pdfs/review/FidelityofImplementation.pdf and Summary of GMU Program Review Recommendations and FCPS Actions to Date (especially the readiness checklist reference at the bottom of page 5) http://www.fcps.edu/is/aap/pdfs/GMUStudyRecommendations.pdf |
Yes, it was. But initially it was going to be a much larger center and after Westbriar became a center and other schools made noise about possibly setting up LLIV programs as opposed to going to LR, there were concerns that not enough kids would come to that program. |
Well, I am part of the Westbriar community and I can tell you that the request did not come from a majority of parents. And yes, those opposing making Westbriar an AAP center did make their opinions known to both the principal, the PTA, as well as the school board rep, who wasn't wild about the idea either. Sadly, these things are not put to a vote, and even when there was a meeting at Westbriar to discuss whether converting to a center made sense, it was clear the decision to go ahead had already been made by the principal, PTA president and others who felt they had a stake in the outcome ( parents who had younger kids they hoped would qualify for AAP). The whole thing was kind of a joke. It will be interesting to see if those parents who had so much certitude about the wisdom of turning the school into a center still feel that way a few years from now when it's pushing 900 kids, and AAP kids are once again threatening to outnumber those from the neighborhood. |
| Some at Lemon Road complain the AAP program there is too small and doesn't have "critical mass." Others at Westbriar complain the AAP program there will get too big and overwhelm the school. It's no surprise that the School Board doesn't do what the "community" wants when the "community" doesn't speak with one voice. |
Oh please. The school board has to approve any AAP-related decisions, including whether or not a center should be implemented. |
+100 Colvin Run is a perfect example of a center with 900+ kids, most of whom (in grades 3-6) are AAP. This school will never be a "community school" as it's AAP run amok. |
The principal has the ultimate say for the community. This is site-based management. It is not management-by-referendum. |
No, they do not. The School Board sets policy. The School Board does not get involved in administrative decisions. |
|
How are the AAP teachers at Westbriar? Are they experienced AAP teachers from other schools or they have been just trained last year to take over new role from 2013-14?.
