GreatSchools Ratings Downgrade for Top FFX Schools

I don't fully understand the Great Schools rating process. Never have. FFX County schools with competitive academics can receive 7 ratings while schools in states w/o strong state standards, mediocre curriculum can get a 10 from Great Schools.

They make it pretty clear on the website that you can't compare ratings between states (different standards.) The ratings are strictly for comparison within a state.

That is why those scores mean nothing? First, the scores are calculated by comparing schools in the area. So if ONE school got better test scores another school is going to drop. It is kind of wierd. I will give this as an example. There is a school in S. Arlington ranked 3. The test scores are all in the high 80th percentile. I looked up my school back home. It is ranked a 6. It's test scores are in the 50th percentile. The school back home is ranked higher becuase the other schools have even worse test scores.

It is difficult in an area like NOVA where the schools are all pretty good (and yes I am standing by this statement becuase compared to the rest of the country, the schools are ALL outstanding, even the ones in the poorer neighborhoods). But it basically means that you are giving lower rankings to scores that have high test scores simply because one school scored 99% and one score 90%.

Also these new rankings crack me up. Now drew model is ranked the same as ashlawn and key? (6 vs. 7). The S. Arlington haters might have to such their mouths now.

Where are all of these catastrophic test scores coming from. What on earth happened yesterday to make these scores plummet so overnight?

Kids have barely even been in school this past month....

Ok I went and checked and sorted all elementary schools in fairfax county by great schools ranking, except key center??? that is rated as 10, the next best ranked starts at 8. So I guess their best ranking is 8 now? Wierd.

So let me get this straight. The ratings were sacrosanct when people could be snobby and declare that they were the best parents sending their kids to the best schools and that the rest of us were horrible and our kids were going to wind up in a gutter.

But now that the scores have evened out and probably refelect a more realistic picture of the differnces between schools people are in shock and even question if the site has been hacked? Hilarious.
