What was your method of determining this?

Oh, I looked out my window. My view's decent so must be the same for everyone else. I don't get it.

I don't expect the system to be my daycare - my kid goes to a private Montessori for which i pay a lot and work my ass off (and no I don't have a high hhi) - I expect them to have a certain amount of full actual school days. And as I mentioned before, I have solid backup for closures but not surprise delays. And no, our school is small and doesn't have any "sahms" to help out. You need to stop using "sahm" as your daycare service. If I was one of them I'd tell you to deal with your own child!

If you're unhappy that your private Montessori, for which you pay a lot, follows MCPS for closures or delays, then you should direct your complaints at your private Montessori, not at MCPS.

Agreed with PP.

People whose children attend private schools that go by the MCPS policy on closings/delays should either find a private school that makes their own decision or get over it. MCPS is a huge system, with more than 200 schools, which means 200+ sidewalks and parking lots to be cleared. It's more than just road conditions that factor into delays or closings.

I DID sweep my sidewalk with a broom!

I assume the snow came as a surprise and crews have to clean the school lots.

Clean the lots? It's 1/2 inch of very soft snow.

I haven't been out. So I don't know.

Nor do I care, as a 2-hr delay doesn't bother me.

And yes, I work outside of the home.

I work out of the house too and yes it does bother me! You are lucky your work seems flexible. Mine isn't and its a big problem. I have back up for days off but surprise 2 hr delays are too. So yes this bothers me.

I still find it amazing that after all of these years dealing with Mo Co's snow policy, people still can't get it together.

I attended Mo Co schools during the 70s and 80s. We NEVER had off - even during some of the worst storms. So we carpooled with some SAHMs who could handle the snow. And if we couldn't get there, we hung out at someone's home if our parents worked.

So stop expecting the system to be your daycare.

In the 70's and 80's the schools were never off because of snow? That is pure bull shit. You are suffering from memory loss.

Uh, yeah we did.

Why don't you take a look at the nightmare in Atlanta yesterday b/c the school system didn't close and didn't take the weather seriously! Maybe you'll better appreciate the steps MCPS takes to protect our kids. Would you prefer your kid to be stuck on a school but until midnight on an icy road so that you can feel good that your school wasn't wimpy and didn't close. Puhleeze.

Would anyone from MoCo chime in with snow totals if they were more than say a dusting/1/4 inch? Let's hear from Germantown/Poolesville. Or maybe it is Potomac who had more this time. It was not on my street in Rockville.

Oh man, I was also a MoCo student in the 70s and 80s (JFK Class of '82, anyone?) and this is such bullshit. We got off all the time, and just like now, we used to laugh (and our parents no doubt complained) about them closing schools for an inch or two of snow.

Potomac streets were clear at 6am.

Germantown here.... Only a dusting. I was under the impression that closure was due to temperature not snow.

I was not surprised. We had maybe 3/4 of an inch in Bethesda. Light and fluffy and easy to drive through but it was still on the roads at the time my high schooler would have driven to school. It was 9 degrees this am so the copious salt on the road didn't seem to have any impact on the snow. I know high schoolers who drive to school are the minority of students and the system should not be catering to them but the 2 hour delays we've had so far have been welcome. Of course easy for me to say since I no longer need to worry about child care issues.

Don't know when the snow fell but it makes sense to me to have a two hour delay. MCPS has to call it by 4:00 in the morning and I would guess that they would not have confidence in the completely safe conditions at 9:00. I remember one recent 2 hour delay that I thought was ridiculous then I nearly fell down on the icy sidewalk taking out the trash. They can't know EXACTLY what the conditions are going to be at 7:30...

Seems to me a two hour delay is extremely prudent with the single digit temperatures we are having lately.

Agreed. And crew cannot start working at 4 am to clean the school. Even at 10 am - the snow was not cleared from where my kids were picked up.
