Thanks.

The eyeroll of the bitter. It's not much money if your salary is already $200k, or whatever OP's might be.

If I make more than that, do I get to eyeroll then? I would really enjoy eye rolling at that comment, but do not like being called bitter.

My friend does this. Her comapny got bought and the new one's office is in Dulles area. Takes her 45-90 minutes each way, depending on traffic that day. So she works from home at least 2x a week, and on the days she's in the office, she leaves by 2pm and then continues working from home once she returns.

Not bitter. Just at such a thinly disguised humble brag.

OP here. Wasn't intended as such though I see why it came across that way. I'd just basically finished a long conversation with a Coworker outlining all the pros and cons - of which there were many cons - and ended the discussion with the measly line. Fresh in my mind I repeated it sans context here. The primary point was that I currently have basically no commute and thus a 45 minute to 1 hour twice a day wasn't worth it for a "measly $30k, which after taxes is maybe a bit more than half that.." Put differently we said whether $75 a day was worth sitting in traffic for two hours, and came to the conclusion it wasnt. Absent all that context I'm sure this post came across as douchey but that wasn't my intent.

Not to mention the cost of gas, tolls, and wear and tear on your car. That alone would probably add up to a few thousand dollars.

Why not move?

Toll road is now up to $7 a day round trip. However, for those still thinking about it, I wouldn't go anywhere near the beltway. If you can get across Chain Bridge, pick up the toll road connector on 123 before Tysons, you can probably get there in 45 minutes or less. 66 backs up outbound around Glebe until the toll road connector, and the beltway never moves.

The morning are more consistent than the evening commute if you go over the American Legion bridge. I rarely make it home in the evenings in 45 minutes.

transaction costs: listing fees, title fees, closing fees, inspections, movers, the possibility we need temp housing, etc. It's easily $100k.
