Still Can't Believe that Whitney Houston Is Dead

You're right. I don't have much empathy for people like Whitney Houston or others who have all the resources to get sober but choose not to. Especially when they have a child. My cousin was a drug addict who had to work her way up from rock bottom and is now clean and sober. And she had nowhere near the support and money that Whitney Houston had.

Ok good for your cousin. We often we THINK WE KNOW what is going on with someone, we see their outer trappings, their public success, their finances, their relationships. HOWEVER, we don't know what demons plague them, what secrets and pain they hold on the inside. There are things about all of us that only God knows. Someone may make different choices, better choices but that just mean they made better choices, doesn't make them better people. There are certainly things I think I would never do, so I spend my time thinking 'Thank God' I had the foresight, strength and measure of faith to do what was best. I pray peace and discernment for those struggling with pain they cannot get past, and behaviours that are now controlling them. I can feel empathy without condoning or supporting dysfunctional behaviour.
I can feel bad for people who lose that struggle, because I know there but for the Grace of God.

addicts often die. it's not unusual.

This is why we will never fully address mental health in this country because of the attitude that individual choice is the main driver in problems like addiction and other issues.

All of that aside, I enjoyed her music and voice and knew that this thread would go off the rails because everyone on here has of course made all the RIGHT choices in their lives and have overcome so much and are oh so perfect. But can't find any lesson, sympathy or compassion in the horrible situations others may find themselves in - especially for someone who gave so much enjoyment to others.

Addiction is a disease.

I don't disagree she had demons and some serious struggles that were not in the spotlight. But she had all the resources available to get help. Money, fans who would have encouraged and supported her, resources, the influence to be able to pull strings and get into the top rehab program, etc. She was a mom and now her poor kid is going to face so many demons because her mom wouldn't get clean.

The world is full of judgmental people.

I've gotten so used to it by now. Very few people are compassionate are empathetic.

Yet, if the tables were turned, they would prefer for others not to judge them.

Her voice was unreal. I have a friend who studied opera and once told me that very few people could hit/carry the notes like she did in "I will always love you."

Listening to "I wanna dance with somebody" right now w

OP-- I hear you. I cried when the news came out and I don't consider myself a huge fan.

It isn't necessarily judging. It is what it is. Why should I be so concerned about someone who obviously cared so little for themself

Celine Dion is talented and beautiful, but I wouldn't go so far to say that she's better than Whitney Houston or Mariah Carey (in her prime).

I think that's a bit of an overstatement
