You're a millionaire, who doesn't speak a 2nd language, and your kids don't speak English well?

You have made some very poor educational choices, apparently...

I'm a cheerleader for second language learning. In fact, my own kids are trilingual. However, I can't deny the millionaire's POV. English-only is still okay. But, that may change going forward. Better be safe than sorry.

I am the millionaire. I have never sat on a business meeting, and there was a person speaking in Arabic. Everyone spoke in English including the Arab business men. We need to stop feeding our kids that learning another language matters. It does not matter. EL Haynes need to worry about more pressing educational issues. The language for capitalism is English, and it will always be English. Now, if you want to be translator at the UN, take your hippy butt and learn another language.

To the smarty pants with the smarty pants question, yes, I am indeed a millionaire. It is not a lot of money especially living in DC. I live check to check.

^^ it's not all about being viable in a capitalist society. Learning a second language opens the door to easier learning of math and science. Don't be so narrow minded. Also, as the US loses it's standing in the world economy, English may take a back seat regarding capitalism too.

You are of course entitled to your opinion. I must say though that if you're a millionaire and your own kids don't speak English well, why are we listening to your opinion on education at all? I'm miles and many many hundreds of thousands away from being a millionaire, and my kids speak excellent English.

There are many benefits to bilingual education, but if that's not for you and your family, fine... I just hope you've got a Plan B because your kids don't speak English well and you think English will absolutely always be the language of capitalism. You may be in for some rude awakenings down the line...

Just made another million. Did not use one foreign language during the transaction.

And that has what to do with language instruction at EL Haynes?

We don't need language instruction!

That's a pretty naive, and dangerous, attitude.

I am The Shaykh. I an oil billionaire and consistently only use Arabic and only deign to use my Eeengleesh when I come to write on the DC Urban Moms public and charter forum to share my experiences with my children at my child's high school, Ballou.

Does anybody believe this "millionaire" is for real? An English-only cheerleader? Come on.

I know there have always been trolls on DCUM... but have they always been sniffing bath salts? Seems like trolling has jumped to a new level of cryptic crazy!

I did not make a million today but sat in on meetings with people from China, Japan, and India. Guess what? They all spoke English, and we all ate steak. In the words of Doug Hefferman, "Shuttie Up!"

Wow, could you BA any more defensive about your English only choices?? No, you could not.

There is nothing wrong with choosing a school that you think is excellent for your kids that is not bilingual. So why do you feel the need to defend your choice so aggressively (and ignorantly) here?
