How did I know that you would dismiss me as an anomaly? Yes, there are a lot of people who homeschool for religious reasons. Yes, there are a lot of people who homeschool because they oppose transforming creative young minds into cogs for the corporate capitalistic hegemony. But if you believe that those are the only people who homeschool, you haven't been paying attention. Note also that I never said that I'm so smart, merely that I exist. (I'm also kind of tickled by the idea that a homeschooling forum on DCUM would somehow "validate" homeschooling.) |
| Yes you have to apply for it, but it's about $20k(about a 2/3 the cost per student) in DC. I know they do the same in Va and Md. No one talks about b/c they don't want everyone doing. |
This is complete horseshit. |
You must not be a homeschooler. |
Documentation, please. |
Yes but this site gets more traffic and supports every other kind of schooling in the DC metro area so why not homeschooling too? |
Wake up and smell the coffee. If you research it a little you find that liberals revived homeschooling in the 1960s and 1970s. The fundies tried to co-opt it. Now, there are growing numbers of homeschoolers from all walks of life. Just sample some of the posts at the Well Trained Mind and you will see that there are many liberals and moderates who homeschool for non-religious reasons. We homeschooled for academic and special needs and we are card carrying Democrats. Liberals have always expressed inclusive ideals so why are you acting like a conservative who wants everyone to be the same?? |
They give you the forms when you inform the school district that you are home schooling. You will not find on a website b/c if it got out all the private school people will want the same. |
Ha ha. This is hysterical. |
Oh, man, really? First the PP at 9:11 says they're a card-carrying Democrat, and I'm thinking, "I'm as Democratic as the PP; how come I didn't get my card?" And now you tell me that all the other homeschoolers get $20,000 from the school district upon notification of homeschooling, and I didn't get mine. That's it, I'm going back to bed. |

It seems the key word is "public". As in public schools. I pay taxes for lots of stuff that I don't use - new road construction in Clarksburg, expansion of a firehouse in upper Montgomery County, a library in Silver Spring, subsidies to Metro, submarines in the south Pacific, food aid to Africa, etc.
I also pay taxes for public schools that I don't "use" because we homeschool. It's OK. Government is not a fee for service organization. |
Hogwash! We homeschooled in the district and there is no such thing. I am not in support of such a thing either. I do think what California offers is interesting though. They have charter schools that homeschoolers can choose to use that supply a choice of curricula and some oversight. |
| Is this a serious post? People with NO KIDS pay taxes. Why would homeschool parents be any different? |
If it is the same poster - at least Jeff will be able to ascertain that. |
Actually most homeschoolers are not in favor of this. I have read many threads on the Well trained Mind and the majority did not want this at all. |
