3 jackets for a 5 year old:
serious winter coat fleece jacket rain coat I buy each a size too big so they will last for 2 years at least. |

We have the same 3 for our 2 yo twins. But in our case, we bought none of them. The fleece and rain coats were bought by a family member who gets a discount at a particular store and so buys them as gifts. The winter coats are hand-me-downs from a friend who has twins 6 years older than ours. |

A couple of hoodies and a couple of cardigan sweaters, one fleece, one casual winter coat (insulated ski style) and one dressy winter wool coat. This year one unlined Hello Kitty raincoat that got used maybe once.
I think it's good to have a second insulated winter jacket for when one gets wet or dirty or lost. |

Feels like my 6-yo kid has a zillion coats. But it's just four:
1. Winter coat 2. Rain coat (we live in a rainy, misty place) 3. fleece sweater-coat 4. windbreaker Crap, no. One more. A faux fur coat from her grandmother. She *loves* that thing, even though it's 99% impractical.

Should say the winter has a liner and a shell. Shell can be worn in rain. |

2yo boy:
2 windbreakers (one jersey lined, one not) 1 puffy winter coat 1 barn jacket type insulated coat 1 heavy fleece jacket 1 fleece vest I'm not counting fleece pullovers or hoodies or sweaters that can be worn in chilly weather without a coat. That's when it starts becoming obvious I have a bit of an overbuying problem. |
