Calling it now: T-R-O-L-L.

I don't understand why this can't be done. They are moving to DC. I would do it if I were in her shoes.

Not judging OP (these are certainly not my standards for a school), if he/she really wants JLKM or charters, he/she should go west of the Park.

Charter admissions, for the ones people like this would consider equivalent to JKLM, are nearly impossible. Not the kind of thing you could ever base a house purchase on, unless you had the admission already in hand.

Honestly, it's not a bad idea. It just ruffles feathers because good charter admissions are sooooo competitive.

I think the thought behind the post is that OP would need to actually move into DC to enroll, not that OP's family would be a living in MD of VA and going to DC school.

When we were house hunting on the Hill, everyone we knew told us to buy wherever we wanted because the OOB lottery was still a viable way to get into a decent school. At that time, you could still lottery into Maury, Brent and SWS/Peabody.

Fast forward to when we actually tried the lottery and we were shut out everywhere! It's nearly impossible to know what the school scenario will look like in the next few years. Fortunately we were able to get into a great charter the next lottery year, so it did work out for us. But it was very, very stressful.

I think you need to weigh how many years you think you want to stay in the area, how far you might be willing to travel for school, and what neighborhoods you really like. Are you willing to try one of those neighborhood schools? JKLM and a few of the other WOTP schools are a sure bet, but some of the charters are really great as well.

On the other hand, if you buy in-boundary you are at the whim of redistricting. Every plan for redistricting I have seen has said that current OOB students -- and not IB students -- would be grandfathered.

Think about this: fifteen years ago the landscape of public education was completely different. There were no charters. They were closing and consolidating schools west of the Park. For kids who are in high school now, that was the time when their parents were making decisions about where to settle and raise their families. Who knows what the next 15 years will bring.

Because it's illegal. You need to lottery using your address. You can make a note that you will move to DC if you get in, but you cannot pretend that you live somewhere that you don't.

That doesn't seem fair that OOB students are grandfathered in but IB students aren't. Why would they do that?

Which charters are considered JKLM equivalents?

The OP said "they are looking to buy in DC"

Obviously it's subjective, but the top 10 or so with long, long waitlists and similar DC CAS scores. Use the search function to find one of the many threads that discuss which schools these are.

Is anyone out there whose IB school is not good and who was shut out of the lottery for a good charter? There are so many people applying for the lottery that this must happen. What are the options?

A general search of the word 'charter' brings up far too much information to be useful, I.e. It's mostly arguments that seem to be in coded wording. I'd appreciate some names so I at least know what I'm looking for.

OP, just read this site the week of the lottery for charters and you will see that there are many, many people disappointed by the results. I would not buy a house knowing that you'd have to risk a lottery for a decent education for your child. I would definitely buy in the JKLMM district.
