Melamine found in Enfamil Lipil

This is a lawsuit waiting to happen. Shame on them for allowing this

That's a good point. There are actually tons of enviornmental chemicals in your own milk. Anything you eat, come into contact with or touch has a chance of entering the milk supply. Just as when you drink it ends up in your milk. Brathing gasoline at the gas station puts chemicals into your milk. It's coming from your boobs, not your liver and although it is 100% better then formula you are still passing on chemicals to the baby.

So, what to do now? It looks like it's not only Enfamil, but 90% of the formula manufactured in the U.S. that is affected. I am nursing my 3 1/2 month old son, but I have to supplement with formula because I have been unable to produce enough milk to allow him to grow at the proper rate.

Me too! I'm totally beside myself. I have no idea what to do and it's making me worried sick (which probably isn't helping the supply either). I've been trying everything to up my supply and it's not working. Any wet nurses out there?

"Breast is best!" I nursed my DD for 15 months and lost my supply many times but pushed though. I know some are unable to nurse though.

The article says there were only trace amounts. I am sure there are trace amounts of lots of chemicals in our food. I know it is scary though.

This is an OUTRAGE!!! They also identified Nestle Good Start Supreme with Iron as containing trace elements of melamine byproduct. I cannot believe these manufacturers set silently while the China scandal was unfolding.

10:09 here.

Well, yes, "breast is best." But I have done my damnedest to exclusively breastfeed (nursing every 90 minutes around the clock, taking fenugreek, drinking gallons of water everyday), and my son was still gaining too slowly by his 2-month ped appointment. So, on my pediatrician's advice, we've been offering him formula after he finishes nursing, and he is now gaining at a proper rate.

I certainly feel like I have done (and continue to do) everything in my power to offer breastmilk to my child, but he still needs about 10 ounces of additional formula per day despite my efforts.

What are the effects of this on children? We finished formula several months ago so is it only affecting current supplies or has it been tainted all along?

As if the FDA has any idea how long it's been going on.

My guess is as long as its been going on in China. And let's not even think about all the OTHER food additives we import from China.

What about our medications? The FDA barely even tests those. Some 80% are made abroad. And they probably have no idea where the componenets of the Baby Tylenol, Children's motrin, and Flintstone vitamins even come from. I'm sure that some of them will prove to be tainted as well... down the line... when someone finally does some tests or FORCES The FDA to release the information.

Thanks for making me feel so much better! Knowing that you pushed through and provided your child with non-melamine tainted formula makes me feel great!

Your post added nothing but another ounce of guilt that some formula feeders experience. Including myself. Hmmm...do I provide my baby BM even though I am undergoing chemo? or do I provide that nasty formula.

There's junk in everything - including your breastmilk. Breast is not always best. This is just another thing for us to obsess over. Breast is besters need to get off their high horses and join the ranks of the rational down to earthers.
Let's not freak out over this and make it worse for everyone.

Ummm...sorry, but the facts don't support this at all. I don't think it's helpful for anyone to pretend that formula is somehow on equal footing with breastmilk. It isn't...particularly in light of this new finding. We don't need to guilt trip people that truly can't breastfeed for various reasons, but we also don't need to make up our own set of facts to make ourselves feel better.

If you read the NPR story, it talks about melamine getting into formula from the manufacturing process or from the packaging, not because we are using Chinese ingredients.

Can't we just keep this thread to the subject at hand, i.e. the melamine getting into the US supply of formula, and leave the breast-vs-bottle issue out of it entirely????

Breast is not always best. Look at all the stories moms post on DCUM dealing with bfing issues. For some families, formula maintains sanity and a sane happy mom is much better than one who dreads feeding her child.
