Who gives a shit what some crap publication thinks about high schools?

No one takes US News seriously anymore.

Who gives a crap? Apparently the schools that supply the data. If you descredit the best-schools that are published then I know you also disregard the worst-schools too.
Anonymous
Some of the schools are ridiculously small how can one compete?

I take this as serious as I do the college rankings...not at all.
Anonymous
Well do employers give a crap about the top-rankings of colleges?

And DC doesn't even have ONE that scored half way decent. Do you care about that? They obviously submitted their info

Did you look at the report? ^^^^^ Apparently not but that's ok. You have this hate for DCPS and it is all good in the scheme of things. We hate you too.

Nope. No hate for DC, just embarrassment and despair.

People here have talked about the avg # of students in a school, as if that is the problem.

The top BASIS schools (#3 and #5) had about the same # of students as our top schools, and VA and MD and TJ make it clear that this is not the problem.

Someone also mentioned student teacher ratios. About the same. Finally, our top schools, who rate terribly on college readiness, are mostly selective - like #2 TJ - so that cannot be the problem either.

I am copying the top stats from DC, MD, and VA, and unless someone wants AGAIN to refer to our problem as "demographic" - read too many [poor] black kids, and black kids are stupid, people here ought to care. We cannot stay in denial because our kids are paying the price, and should be furious because we are being cheated - by whom and how I have no idea, but we are graduating a lot of students from our "top" high schools who are probably not ready for anything but community college or ITT tech. NOT ok with me.

This is the first time I have had kids old enough to look at where we stand and now I REALLY understand why people feel they have to move to Md and VA if they don't have the $ to pay the freight for private and are not zoned for Deal/Wilson (whose rank I did look up, but apparently white high SES kids do actually get into decent colleges via the academies and so Wilson actually counts ).

Maryland rank teacher student ratio total pop college readiness
Churchill 52 19:1 2,113 85.6
Whitman 59 17:1 1,951 84.2
Poolesville 99 19:1 1,170 75.6
Wooton 105 19:1 2,409 74.6
Montgomery 106 2,004 74.6
BCC 126 19:1 1,799 69.7

Virginia
TJ 4 17:1 1,811 100%
Langley 84 20:1 2,902 79.2
Madison 101 20.1 2,000 75.3
Mclean 107 20:1 1,952 74.4
Woodson 126 20:1 6, 210 72.0

The District of Columbia
SWW 266 12:1 456 56.2
BB 461 14:1 461 47.2
Ellington 1772 39:1 506 20.7
McKinley 1897 14:1 689 19.1
no other school ranked

So now that we are dealing with real numbers, let's have a real discussion

Guess that discussion isn't gonna happen.

Be sure to find out what the USNWR "college readiness" index means before having your discussion.

a few years back, CHEC aka Bell Multicultural HS was in the top 50 even though even though it is a known fact that the school is a drop out factory.
It was Maria Tukeva and her PR people who made a big deal about it until they realized how rediculous it sounded and looked.
Teachers were writing blogs about how students who could barely read at 6th grade level were forced to take multiple AP classes.

The ranking of the schools depend heavily on the number of AP classes students are "forced" to take

Who gives a crap? Hell, people emigrate here from foreign countries to attend TJ.

why don't you educate us? Or why don't you just stop blowing smoke and admit that when Banneker's SAT scores are below the NATIONAL AVERAGE and it is supposed to be our TJ there is something really wrong, even if instead of being #447 it should have been... where?

Whatever college readiness is, like most other things US News & World Report has us WAY behind the top Md and VA schools. While they may be off by 100, this is just plain an embarrassment. We did not even have 5 schools that were RANKED people. Take your heads out of the sand.

Just because one school was able to game the system one year does not allow you to throw out the baby with the bathwater. And the baby is that we don't have a single school in the TOP 200, while Whiteman, Churchill etc may go up or down a little each year, we are not even in the game, man

SWW ranks higher than New Trier and Scarsdale.
