Molluscum Contagiosum So Gross Skin Virus

Anonymous
My son got molluscum when he was 3 and they told me they could do the beetlejuice thing too but that was unacceptable to me I did a little research and found this product called molluscumrx and LOVED it!!! It was pain free and gone and has not come back and he is 6 now. I hope this helps! I felt so lost when my son had it.

OP here...just curious why did you find the beetlejuice unacceptable? My son's one elbow appears to have completely blistered and popped. The one elbow looked like nothing until they put the beetlejuice on it and now it looks like a war zone. The other elbow looked really bad when we took him in and I'm not sure if it got all of them on the elbow. The ones on the elbow seemed really bad. I never noticed the problem until the day before I took him in.

Zymaderm. It works. That beetle stuff burns off the bumps but can create scars.

We got it frozen off, and that hurt very badly, but then it was gone.

Like you, they did not tell me about the gross festering mess that was going to occur or what to do about it. We just cleaned it and kept it covered. DD had to miss a birthday party at the water park and swimming lessons for a while.
It was horrendous, insufferable, and like you, I wanted it gone yesterday. I think our problem was we had one big one and did not know what it was and while she was away grandma popped it thinking it was some big zit or something and then didn't take care of it. It spread all over her stomach from there.

When she came back we went into aggressive mode. Vinegar and bandaids each night on each one. We read conflicting stories about whether to pop it when it got bigger and take out the "seed" inside. Some say never do it others say you must do it. We did it. We found that once we started doing this as instructed online and then treating with vinegar, they went away one by one. They are now all gone and have been for a while. But I think we had them for at least a year. Very frustrating. I thank goodness there was no spread to the face.

Thanks so much for the advice! How long after you went into aggressive mode did it last? Also, what do you recommend in terms of bathing? Showers only? My son is 6.

It was sort of a winding down process afterwards. Once we popped the bump and took the seed out, it pretty much shriveled and died in a week or so. So it was a matter of letting each one reach its peak. I would say two months. But it was a long two months. And it hurt like hell. DH would hold her down and I would do the surgery. Lol.

My understanding is that popping the bumps can make them spread! Not what you want. My son had a relatively mild case - he was prescribed a cream and instructed not to scratch them (that is what was making them spread). He kept them covered, put cream on them and they were gone within a month or two.

That was a while ago and no recurrence thank goodness.

Thanks OP here. I put in a call to the dermatologist to find out what to do about the boils given the conflicting reports above. I'll post when I know so that hopefully if someone else comes across this they will have the info. Do anyone know where their child got theirs too? I'm guessing the pool.

DD toddler had them on her abdomen, shoulder, and leg. It was AWFUL. They lasted 11 months - once they started to pop they all just went away. We declined beetlejuice b/c the derm said it would hurt and possibly scar. She does have small pock marks on her torso where the bumps were really bad.

It's highly contagious so it's hard to know where it came from . If it did come from the pool you wouldn't get it simply from swimming in chlorinated water but maybe from climbing on each other in the pool or sharing towels, pool toys that sort of thing.

My son's doctor took a sample from one of the boils and had the lab confirm that it was not a staph infection (it wasn't). Also, his doctor prescribed the cream that we used - I think that you should definitely see a doctor....

Oops. Just realized that your child has received a diagnoses from the doctor which is good!

My youngest had it a couple of years ago. Our pediatrician gave us several treatment options then said that if it were her child, she wouldn't treat them at all. We followed that advise and just left them alone. They were completely gone within about four months.

When all is said and done, that's pretty much what we did. The topical cream was an anti-itch med to prevent scratching and we kept the area covered (with clothing) to prevent spread to others. It didn't take long for it to just disappear.

OTC benzoyl peroxide works too - good old Clearsil.
