Given our diverse student body and low non-white SAT scores, I suggest the new Superintendent be of Minority Race drawn from NYC, Philadelphia, Norfolk, New Haven or like kind cities to emulate/model/reach to success for all our students. Time to change from the historic caucasian superintendent in Alexandria City.

White students in TC scored 1670, outperforming FFX. This is why so many (white) parents come on here being all boosterish and touting the virtues of diversity.

It's plainly obvious ACPS delayed releasing its scores until it could figure out the best way to message the atrocious achievement gap.

White students at TC scored higher than the overall FCPS average (1663) but lower than the FCPS average for white students (1719).

What is the reason why black students in Alexandria perform even worse than Hispanic students with a language barrier? Are they really that much worse off financially? Seems hard to believe.

Effect of ghetto culture. The vast majority of Alexandria's blacks come from housing projects.

Lack of hope for many, perhaps the majority. Hope for a well paying job, a way out of poverty, some respect. Lack of duo parenting, usually done by moms/grandmoms whose shoulders are broad but tired and can't participate the way PTA wishes they would. While many ACPS minorities engage in after school sports, you either make the team or you don't and many don't or are cut for GPA sustained <2.0 (school for thought here.) Drug culture (not just pot) involving money making.

Sadly, the Hispanic score being higher may reflect the higher percentage of Hispanics who drop out and thus don't take the SAT.

I'd like to see the scores of each of the subgroups for each county. It would be nice to know if one county is doing noticeably better in reducing the achievement gap.

The horror. I'll trade the extra points for a house I can afford, a great neighborhood, laid-back neighbors, and a short commute. If I moved to Arlington, I wouldn't be able to afford to send my kid to college anyway.

That's probably true. The Hispanic numbers reflect a bit more sample bias. TC has an especially atrocious record of Hispanic dropouts. It's sad.

I don't know if it's a horror or not, but you might as well compare apples-to-apples. The prior post seemed to imply white students at TC outperform their white peers in Fairfax, due to the diversity, but the scores don't back that up.

Here is Arlington:

Blacks and Hispanics performed better in 2013 than in past years. Overall decline in number of students taking SAT because more took ACT. Overall, test taking is up.

Ha PP: you'll be singing dixie over your response to those lower SAT percentage points when your kids are applying to college!

27% of Alexandria residents are African-born. So a lot of those "black" students in Alexandria are probably ESL students. Also, Hispanic doesn't necessarily mean English isn't their first language.

On page 5 of the 2010 ACPS document below there is a slide presented by Monte Dawson, then Executive Director Department of Accountability: "African-American and Latino Program Participation Broken out by Ethnicity".

It shows roughly that about 18% of African Americans and 63% of Latino's were ESL. Too bad Mr. Dawson has left ACPS; he was unique.

Might as well throw this in here and well you can judge for yourself

Whitman’s graduating students scored an average of 1901 out of 2400 on the most widely used college admissions test. Whitman’s 38-point jump from the class of 2012 average was among the largest increases in the school system.

Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School’s average was 1760, up from 1746 in the 2012 graduating class and 1742 in the 2011 graduating class. B-CC also saw an increase in SAT participation from students who receive free-and reduced-price meals (FARMS), an indicator of economic disadvantage.

Walter Johnson’s class of 2013 averaged 1716 on the test, down from the 2012 and 2011 class averages of 1744.

Countywide, students from the class of 2013 averaged 1648, three points fewer than the 1651 average of the 2012 class. The percentage of students who took the test dropped from 70.7 percent to 69.2 percent.

The statewide public school SAT average was 1456, with 69 percent of students taking the test. The nationwide class of 2013 average was 1474 for public school students.
