I think you may be thinking of the Twinbrook area. I have heard of some spikes in crime around there (and it is only hearsay). I really don't think that's 20852. As with any area, OP, you can go a couple miles in any direction and get a different demo, different crime stat. If you tell us which schools you feed into, we can give you a better idea of what it's like to live there. |
OP here: why not? |
Oh dear..I couldn't disagree with PP more. We love Rockville..great services..great rec programs. Everytime I call a city person weather about a street light or a question about the web site, I am so happy with the service I get. Of course there are many different neighborhoods..but we are very happy (20850) |
20852 off of tuckerman/edson/tilden is really nice. $750k+ THs and $1 million plus houses. I think of this when i think of Rockville/20852 (plus I live there). |
There are many different neighborhoods in 20852. Some are filled with large lovely homes that sell for close to $1m, others have much smaller homes with greater diversity and higher crime rates. Some areas feed to WJ cluster schools, and some feed to Wheaton cluster schools.
Hard to say anything singular about the whole zip code other than that its close to a lot of stuff, and generally metro accessible. |
Is Viers Mill/Pike intersection really 20852 ? I thought that was the area around Tilden/ Tuckerman. |
Agree. 20852 is a big zip code and has many different levels of housing. Depending on your price range, I'd really consider that quadrangle that is formed by Tuckerman to the south, Montrose to the North, Old Georgetown to the East and 270 to the west. There is a neighborhood south of Tuckerman called Windermere that is pretty too. I love the Luxmanor neighborhood. Pretty houses and large lots but expensive! |
Rockville is a very diverse community and as with any large city, there are pockets that are great and other areas that some have referred to. If crime is a concern, check out www.crimereports.com. Walter Johnson is a highly rated school and Richard Montgomery offers the Magnate program as well. For more info on the schools, try www.greatschools.org. |
Hi - what is the elementary school? I live in Rockville and can tell you about some of the different neighborhoods.
If the house is East of Rockville Pike and North of Viers Mill - Then the neighborhood feeds into the Maryvale elementary school. That neighborhood is solid middle class - not upper middle class (think volunteer fire fighters or police officers live there). There is also low income housing that feed into that school. That said a friend lived in that neighborhood and liked it - a fire fighter lived across the street from her which is why I had referenced that profession. If the house is West of Rockville Pike, then the house is in the "near west end" and you will live fairly close to the City of Rockville. The elementary school is Bealle and I have heard good things about that school. That neighborhood is safe and family friendly and the houses range from middle to upper middle class. Twinbrook is in 20851, so I don't think the house is in that neighborhood, but if it is, then the elementary school is Twinbrook ES and the neighborhood is simliar to the Maryvale neighborhood - solid middle class - not upper. I know someone (professional - 2 govt lawyer family) that live there and, while it gets a bad rap on this board, the neighborhood is quite nice. There are a couple of other neighborhoods in Rockville, but they are zip code 20850 and not right off Viers Mill so the house would not be there. |
We are in Bethesda. Anytime I have to make a trip to some bigger box store, I always regret going into Rockville. It is congested, and just strip mall after strip mall. I find it incredibly depressing. I usually end up going to Silver Spring instead because Rockville is just so...bleh. |
OP, I would not live in Rockville right near Rockville Pike. It's congested and not the greatest part of Rockville. I have lived in Rockville my entire life (except for 5 years in a condo in Bethesda). Rockville has several zip codes: 20850, 20851, 20852, 20853 and a small part of 20854. I live in 20853. It's further away from Rockville Pike but still nice. Some of 20853 I would not want to live in (small houses and not great schools). We are in a nice small pocket of that zip (and are honestly moving to a bigger house either in 20852, 20854 or portion of 20850). 20850 has some nice areas and some city of Rockville areas that I would not like to live in. I would avoid 20851 altogether. It's not a good area overall (that is mostly where you will find the crime). 20852 is an overall nice area (I like the area off Tuckerman that feeds into WJ). I grew up in a pocket of 20854 that was the city of Rockville, but mail goes through the post office in Potomac (hence the 20854 zip). It's also a nice area. |
