Recommend where to adopt a dog - which rescue org?

This is what we did. I posted on another thread about the positive experiences we had with Lucky Dog, Homeward Trails, Lost Dog Rescue, Fairfax Co Humane Society and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. From the time we started our search to the time we brought a dog home was about 1 month.

If anyone's interested, this sweet dog is waiting at Fairfax Cty. Animal Shelter. Just forwarding in case anyone is interested?

"Please help us find Buttercup a forever home! She is a diamond in the rough with a huge heart who just wants to be someone's pet. This young, female pit mix is gentle with all people and other animals and is easy going. We give her an A+ for temperament! Her adopter will be very lucky and very loved."

We got our dog from Friends of Homeless Animals (foha.org). They have a great facility out in Loudoun and you can really spend a lot of time with the dogs on their walking trails to see which one is a good fit.

PS Fairfax County Animal Shelter FB page says:

"Our adoption floor is completely full and there are many different ages, sizes and breeds available. We open at noon today so stop by to see us and spread the word about all of the great adoptable dogs that are waiting to find their forever homes!"

So, sounds like they have plenty of dogs to choose from! Good luck!

Homeward Trails is having a dog-adoption event this Saturday at Wylie Wagg in Arlington (Courthouse area). This link shows which dogs will be there, but there may be more as well.

HART is a wonderful rescue in Fairfax Station. They show their dogs at Greenbriar Petco on Saturdays, and at other locations as well. We got our dogs (brothers) from them and the fosters that our dogs came from are still friends.
Great website too.

Yeah, but look at Buttercup there. She is only part PB and got an A+ (!!) on her temperament test. This means she is gentle with dogs, cats, other animals, all people, kids, babies, etc.! WOW.

All the rescue groups and the shelters do these temperament tests on them and can tell you exactly about their personalities, so, don't get scared away just by their breed (or, even, part of their breed)!

Remember: PBs used to be considered family dogs and were called "the nanny dog" b/c they were so dependable and loyal with the kids. Remember Petey the dog from Little Rascals? And, also the symbol for RCA (the record company) and Buster Brown Shoes! It's all in how they are raised, and it varies from dog to dog, so ask athe rescue group or shelter.

Look at all these pics of cute PBs in the olden days with their charges http://www.ywgrossman.com/photoblog/?p=676

We did too. Our dog, who came right off the transport from WVa turned out to be pregnant. They were wonderful with follow-up support, placing puppies and paying for care for the pups.
