In some fields (math heavy), there are very few qualified US citizens. My company does not pay low wages and we do go through the effort to hire those on H1 B visas. We have a few positions that require the applicant to be a citizen and those take much longer for us to fill. |
My company (construction general contractor) hires quite a few H1 visa holders and my wages are not low. However, much fewer get sponsored for greencards. It's not that the company is unwilling. It's the paperwork and procedures that get in the way. 6 years ago, we had 10 employees seeking company sponsored GCs. Only 2 stayed long enough to get them. The rest were let go or jumped ship. |
| That is NOT true that they can not work for pay during school. Yes there is OPT, but there is also CPT - curricular practical training. If the internship is directly related to the major and is an important part for that major, then the student can do a CPT. CPT can be paid. If the student is enrolled, CPT can be no more than 20 hours a week, and 40 hours during summer. CPT will count as a credit towards the degree. International student office can help to file it. It is easy to do and doesn't take very long to complete the paperwork as long as the job meets the requirements (i.e. the company is registered in the US etc) and as long as it is directly related to the student's major. |

| It is funny that Americans can’t compete or don’t like to compete. What they forget is that generations ago their ancestors too migrated from Europe or Africa. Those migrants have had little economic or intellectual contribution to US as most of them were poor and lesser/hardly educated. And now you are discriminating those international students who are pumping money into your economy. Can US provide Federal Aid to American Citizens without collecting the kind of tuition it is collecting (100% or even more of tuition) from International students? We contribute both Economically and Intellectually to US. Just see the history of Silicon Valley, and what caused its success. In the past 20 years the visas to US have become very tough, there were hardly any rules generations ago when people could just migrate without any merit. Poor people, illiterate people could migrate. Can the same type of people migrate now to US? Before making a paycheck in the US, we have already spent over $100000 in our tuition which allowed you to get need based help. You don’t even need any academic merit to get aid. But the international students don’t even qualify for such Aid since we must pay for your tuition. US Government has already made it so easier for you to study and still you guys complain. What a shame! Come on compete with us on MERIT. Your grandparents already made an easy migration to US. |
| It's an internship - I would seek an American - after-all as one PP is saying American's are not qualified. An internship is a great way to change that! |
And that's why companies should expand their internships programs and provide more training and experience to Americans. |

I interview college kids for summer/fall hires. We have a college program at work and routinely hire 40 to 60 kids every year.
There are hundreds of kids looking for jobs/interns at VT/UVA/VCU/CNU/MD why does anyone hire kids from half way around the world when there are hundreds of kids from our own state looking for internships and jobs???? At least try first with kids from US, maybe someone day someone else will hire your child. |
This is just plain wrong. There are plenty of virginia graduates looking for jobs for engineering and math. Just make a modicum of effort. I know I have interviewed these kids and many are OUTSTANDING, that I can not hire. try and call, rather than give in to the recruiters placing H1Bs and others at cheap wages, a simple google and call and email VCU -> (804) 828-1645 VT -> 540-231-8875 M. Instead, critics say, it is increasingly being used to find workers willing to accept lower salaries. The program allows up to 65,000 high-skilled foreign workers to work in the US for up to three years. Competition is intense: The visas are handed out on a first come, first served basis and it took just four days for the 2014 quota to be filled after it opened on April 1, 2013. | What you might not realize is that students in the United states on F-1 visas are keeping a lot of universities afloat these days and families give everything to give these opportunities to their children (even though they are not American). Give them a chance, you'll find many unbelievable employees and wonderfully culturally competent people. |
