Op, I know you think you are helping your friends. But you are not. As a DCPS teacher with a verbally abusive principal you are just making their job harder by posting on a public forum. My school is a hot topic on one of these threads and teachers are being 'disciplined' bc the admin thinks they have been writing on this forum. The sad truth is it's a low bar to be a principal here in DC.

Isn't this what unions are for? I don't know much about unions, but seems like they could step in if the majority of teachers file a complaint?

Parents and teachers going to a council member seems like a good idea too, but of course it's a huge risk!

I hope something is done. Our kids and teachers deserve better.

Unions only deal with contract violations. Nothing in the contract talks about verbal abuse or harassment.

Anonymous wrote:OP, are you a teacher at this school? Because if you aren't, then I don't understand why you are getting involved with a supposed matter of how a principal interacts with the teachers.

If you're a parent, you have the right to expect clear communication from the principal and a solid school discipline. But you DO NOT have the right to tell the principal how he/she should instruct the teachers she supervises or what methods of leadership work best. That's between the principal, the superintendent, and the teachers. Let them sort out their issues. You focus on your children. Things work A LOT more smoothly when everyone focuses on their own interests rather than telling others how to conduct their affairs.

Honestly PP, that's like "trickle down economics": if it worked, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Whether OP is a teacher, a parent, or simply a concerned community member, EVERYONE has a right to be concerned about what's going on in a school building and how it affects the children who are supposed to be educated in that building. If OP's post is true, students are losing out big time because teachers are unhappy or even worse, harassed.

EVERY DC RESIDENT who pays taxes has a right to express concerns and try to fire off flares into the sky if they think something egregious is occurring at a DC public school. Some voices are going to be taken more seriously than others: teachers, students, parents, principals. But ANYONE can try, and thank heavens everyone doesn't think like you do, in this limited, totally counter-productive "Stay in your own lane" thinking. What big problems ever get solved by everyone staying in their lanes and only speaking out about the things directly in their control? NONE. It wouldn't become a big problem if people were taking care of business in the first place.

I have no idea if these are real problems that OP describes at Malcolm X ES. But I would rather serious concerns like this be expressed to whoever has influence and will listen and look into it, than that people feel like they have to mind their own business and leave it to others to resolve. Kids can't speak up for themselves on things like this, and they are the most important part of the equation. An awful school leader, or awful teachers, or awful security conditions... all of those make it IMPOSSIBLE for kids to get what they need in school, especially elementary school kids.

OP go for it, if you really think there is a concern, talk to whoever you think will listen and can help. Mayor's office, City Council, anyone. Students need this hlep.

Oh please. Do not talk about something like this when you obviously know nothing about it. Unions can (and usually do) deal with anything that affects the conditions that a union member is working in. If a unionized worker is being verbally abused or harassed, they can absolutely ask for union representation in bringing it to HR. I have sat in on several of exactly those types of meetings.

Not OP, but to the teacher saying this doesn't help, then please tell us, exactly what DOES help? If a principal is really this horrible, and teachers are trying to work it out and instead getting harassed even more, please explain exactly how that whole situation gets resolved to advantage of the teacher, the students and the school, without others getting involved? I understand the principal may lash out, and I can understand if teachers at that school are looking for other jobs. But if this principal is really that bad, teachers running away doesn't solve the problem for the students or the school, who are stuck there.

So how does the problem get solved if whatever the teachers in your school are doing isn't solving the problem, but you dont' want anyone else to get involved?

Well principals had their reviews in April...so if it was all that bad she would have been notified to vamoose.
