No joke, this is serious!

Because, stupidly, the kid sought shelter under a tree. Lightning hits the tallest object and the safest action id to lie flaton open ground. Obviously, the coach is way smarter than any of you.

20:41 here. I am mistaken, do not lie flat but you should curl up in ball eith hands over head.

Sorry, the safest thing to do is to get the F inside / somewhere safe. While there is certainly a time and place for the lightning safety position, it should be considered the option of last resort, which should basically never be necessary for athletic events near shelter. (It is usually taught for backcountry safety situations.)

Sounds like your son is old enough to make the right call on this without you doing it for him. Tell him that adults sometimes make the wrong decision and that he should walk off the field next time.

In theory I agree with this, but the social pressure in a team sport, with the coach telling people to keep practicing, has got to be immense. I would not rely on a kid, even a strong willed kid, to break away from that.

I agree but the problem with the Situation when Noah eig died is that there was no shelter near the field. The nearest shelter would have been the cathedral or sta, which involved a long walk up a hill surrounded by woods and trees, or strangers' houses. There were hundreds of people there and nowhere to go. Yes he should not have huddled under a tree but the entire area was surrounded by trees and it is the highestoint on dc. In retrospect, it would have been safer for people to go to the field.
