I have never understood the latent hostility of some athiests towards believers. Why do you care? You don't believe in God, fine. I don't really like artichokes, but I don't make a point of always telling people who like artichokes that I think they taste terrible.

The smugness of a segment of the athiest community is really unappealing.

I agree. That's why, although I do not believe that God exists as an objective reality, I accept that He exists for believers as a subjective reality, and that this fact is itself an objective reality of great importance in our society. But while I think all of us atheists should respect that subjective reality, I also think believers should accept that God is not an objective reality to be forced by our political system on those of us who do not share the faith in His existence.

Thanks. Atheists like you are the reason I was careful to use the phases "some athiests" and "segment of the...community". I know the condescending athiests crowd do not speak for all.

On the substantive part of your post. I am all for separation of church and state. I think it has gotten a little goofy and out of hand. It seems that the separation of church and state movement has, in the last 25 years become hostile to Christianity for no real reason. I don't want anyone to force my kids to pray at school. But if someone is praying at school, I'm OK with kids opting out or silently meditating in their own way.

I'll grant that some go overboard, as do some on the other side. For example, "if someone is praying at school" could cover a lot of cases. Based on what you have said, I think you would probably agree that it should not cover something like a public school teacher saying "Okay, now is our prayer time. If someone would like to come up and lead us in thanking Jesus for this day, please raise your hand. Those of you who would like to remain silent during the prayer are free to do so." But I also think there are many who would think I'm weird for considering that a violation of the First Amendment.
