I'm addicted to chocolate milk.

Chocolate almond milk is your friend (friend to baby cows too)

You know yourself better than any of us. For me, substituting other chocolate (beverages or otherwise) would NOT be the answer. I would just go cold turkey and suffer through a week or so of headaches and cravings. Eventually, your palate will change and you will not crave the stuff the way you do now. But -- and this is key -- you have to be willing to go through the tough part without giving in.

Try cutting out all chocolate flavors from your foods as well. And then just stop. Take it one day at a time. When you crave the chocolate milk, go do something else (exercise, perhaps?) It will take some time, but not forever. And then you will come to a point where merely looking at chocolate milk will make you sick to your stomach.

PS - PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT HERE -- THIS IS WHY PARENTS SHOULD NEVER START THEIR KIDS ON CHOCOLATE MILK IN THE FIRST PLACE! IT IS CRAP AND THEY DON'T NEED IT!!! STICK TO PLAIN MILK, PLEASE!

Listen, I have no doubt that OP is struggling with her horrible chocolate milk habit. However, there is nothing inherently evil about chocolate milk. Sure, kids shouldn't have it all the time but c-milk can serve as a great substitute for other, more sugar-laden items in one's diet.

I hate to say it but OP's problem has more to do with just the sugar addiction. She mentioned that her father gave it to her daily until he left when she was 14. I'm sure her "need" for chocolate milk has much more to do with her subconcious desire to stay attached to those happy moments with her dad. It could've been anything -- in this case, it was chocolate milk.

Totally disagree. There is no reason to ever give kids flavored milk.

Stop the milk like smoking. Start by cutting back a 1/4th of a cup a day. It should be easier than cold turkey. (I actually quit smoking 10 years ago by the cold turkey method. It was rough.)

Anonymous wrote:OP here: regardless of this being an emotional dependency or a chemical dependency, it's still a dependency. Chemicals get us addicted by unleashing chemicals in our brain that makes us feel good. That feeling is what we go back for.
I have tried to go cold turkey. Then every time I have a rough patch, a stressful week or something really upsets me, I go back. Do you know how stupid I feel walking into a grocery store with my kids past their bed time because I HAD to have chocolate milk? Do you know how embarrassing this is? Trust me, if it was just a matter of will, I would never had chocolate again.

And yes, my kids are allowed to have chocolate milk. Only once in a blue moon, however.

OP, this is your problem right here. It's hard. We've all said that. But if you're going to toss in the towel every time you have a rough patch, stressful week or something really upsets you, you're never going to get over this.

There is no magic formula. Just stop. That's it. That's all we, or anyone else can say. The rest is up to you.

i just want to reiterate what 1420 said. Op, you seem dead set on.the idea this is.a.chemical dependency. Perphaps it is a little, but i think it is an overwhelmingly a psychological one. I really think you should consider some pps advice. Whether a therapist or OA, you need some help with the emotional ties you have to the milk before youll be able to quit completely.

While I'm not 100% vegan, I don't have a lot of dairy. When you think about it, it's actually pretty gross. You're drinking the breast milk of cows. Cow tit juice.

You're not even an adult drinking the breast milk of your own species. You're drinking the titty juice of another species. A completely different animal's breast milk.

If that doesn't make you want to cut down on drinking milk (be it chocolate or regular milk), then I don't know what will.

Chocolate milk is proven better than electrolyte drinks after heavy physical exertion.

Grandma beings it for an after travel soccer drink for my boys (90 minutes of non-stop hard running and sweat). It's recommended by trainers.

Switch to red wine instead.

Seriously I love drinking a glass of wine a night, but I'm trying to cut back my sugar too. So I have it one night a week now. Its a compromise and it's been working for me. I also have cut carbs but I still have one "cheat meal" a week...we had red wine and stuffed shells last Saturday.

And I have lost 10 lbs this month!

OP you have to replace the habit, not just give it up.

Since chocolate milk seems also very tied to your childhood, your father, etc, I wouldn't replace it with something miserable like water. Replace it with a vanilla shake. For a month or two, until you've broken the c-m habit.

Later, when you are replacing your yummy vanilla shake habit with another habit, that is the time to go more health-concious…like coffee, tea, warm bouillon or soup broth, whatever.

Just do it in two stages. The first stage is to get over only the emotional and memorial stage--the psychological stage through substituting emotional fattening drink for unemotional fattening drink. The second stage is getting rid of (replacing) only the fattening habit.

Try half a cup of warm plain whole milk. Or switch to smoothies which can taste and feel pretty good with only healthy ingredients.
