That sounds amazing. Where there? |
College student here, (went to London last year and now returning again next year for grad school) and I just wanted to share that all of my scholarships, loans, and even 529 transferred over to my semester abroad. In the end, the school I chose wound up having cheaper tuition/room than my US school, so there was actually some savings in that regard (though we chose to funnel that back in towards extra travel through Europe). So I just wanted to encourage everyone not to rule it out right off the bat from the perception that it is financially out of reach. Definitely have your kids talk with their schools Study Abroad and Financial Aid advisors to help figure it all out. |
Some of us poors had to stay in the darn US for all of college ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Thank you for this information. It is a helpful addition to this topic. |

being poor is the reason I studied abroad. |
Yep. You nailed it my parents are so wealthy, that's why half of my college education has been paid for with loans and the other half has been paid for with merit scholarships (that I worked my butt off in high school to earn). That's also why I've worked as much as possible and saved every dime so that I could support myself while I was in London (and so that I can again support myself while earning my MA next year). ![]() |
The year that I studied at the Complutense University of Madrid, tuition there was a fraction of what it was at my home college, and the cost of living was very low (no longer the case in Madrid, but it was then). That year of school cost less than half of what it would have, had I not gone abroad. |
Tanzania |
Many schools have the system worked out so that studying abroad is the same cost as staying home. For those that don't, you may actually be able to save mo ey by going somewhere with lower tuition (pret much anywhere else in the world) and or lower cost of living (south America, Africa, etc) |
I'm sure that will be fun. How are the academics? Which school? |
