OP here. A full year sounds great. Long enough to really immerse yourself into the culture. Your DC will come back quite fluent no doubt.

PPs, stress to your kids that to achieve fluency, they really need to make friends outside their circle of other American exchange students. When I did this (ages ago) this was definitely a risk, more so since not all the classes were in the foreign language.

I did a semester abroad (in UK) 25 years ago and it is still one of my fondest memories....
