Would you buy a house in NOVA with no garage?

Anonymous
Yes, but the house would need good storage. Where will you keep yard tools, etc?

Also what is the street parking like? In some town home communities without garages the parking gets a bit crazy.

If those two hurdles were lifted, then I wouldn't have any concerns.

I loved parking in my garage in the winter, so I didn't have to de-ice/defrost, and the car was warm, but it was just a luxury. Now our garage stores too much crap.

It was not a must-have for us but we ended up buying one with a 2 car garage and have loved having it! Definitely helps with everyday living, especially with 3 kids.

Your store your things in the basement and/or a shed. We have a driveway, so parking isn't an issue. We just don;t have a garage. We've lived this way for 12 years, so I would say a garage is not a necessity. Nice to have? Of course, if you can find a house you like in your price range with one.

The standards of living are terrible, I would expect a garage as a standard outside of the dc area.

I think it depends on the type of people you are. If you are primarily indoors people with indoors hobbies, you can get by without a garage. But if you want the kids to build things, work on big, messy projects, store camping gear, kayaks, you name it, then a garage is very nice to have.

OP isn't asking about houses outside the DC area, she's asking about houses in NOVA.

Without at least a 3-car? Typical potomac new money try-too-hard housewife.

Three car? I couldn't live without a five car garage.

14:46 - half the garages in arlington are detached and wouldn't help you stay dry in the rain anyway.

I have bought two houses with no garage. We only saw a few houses with garages during our search. As long as I have assigned parking (in my first house, a townhouse) or a driveway (my second house, a SFH), I don't care. I do need to buy a shed, though, for my mower and other tools. $1K for a shed is cheaper than paying $50K extra for a house with garage! (assuming it's not more like $150K!)

We have a really nice garage, much newer than the house. We store stuff in it and use the space, but the car has been in it exactly 3 times in 8 years. When we renovate I really want to tear it down to reclaim yard space but I am told that is not wise. Lack of a garage would not be a dealbreaker for me. I am in upper NW DC so much like the close-in nova suburbs.

Look, we have a five car garage and I plan to add a sixth.

One for the Mercedes, one for the BMW, one for the Audi, one for the Range Rover (it is extra wide) and one for our two Harleys.
Pimmit Hills has big yards so having a six car garage is easy peasy.

Arlington housing under 1.5 million is not modern or up to par so bad example there.

I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't have a Bentley.

I never understood detached garages either.
