So. How do you even begin to rank these things? Do I rank the schools that I might have a snowball's chance in first (like Langdon and Burroughs and Takoma), or do I rank the "better" ones that everyone else wants first (SWS, Peabody, Logan Montessori)?[/q]

If you are unwilling to go to your IB, are there any DCPS possiblities that are in proximity to you? If so, I would strongly consider ranking it first or near first because that will be the only school you have any preference for. Apparently DCPS is changing the way the OOB waitlist is handled this year...if you get into a school you are then bumped off the waitlists for all the other schools on your list that are ranked behind that school you got into. The idea is you got something you wanted so no need to hold a waitlist spot for you on schools you didn't want as much. So you need to be very thoughtful about the order of your rankings. Think about not only what school you want most, but also which schools will truly work for you and your family in terms of commute, before and aftercare availability, etc. Good luck.

Sigh. So I guess the reality is that I will be almost entirely dependent on the charter lotteries. I'm going to rank all of the schools within proximity that might be even a possible option, and hope that will result in a halfway decent backup plan. Thanks for posting the statistics--my list looks entirely different now!

Well, the good news is there has been a recent crop of new charters that are desirable, so if you can be patient and wait out the shake out of all the schools and seats, you'll likely get in somewhere you are happy with. Take heart.

Logan Montessori is all oob so you have as good a shot as anyone (aside from those with sib preference) there. They only take 3-4 yr olds though unless they have already been in a Montessori school.

Sws is all oob too

Oh, yeah. Sorry. Barring a miracle, it's not happening. Most of those schools are over-enrolled. Now you know!

Oh my - I am going nuts. I meant I am looking EAST of the park. Clearly my kid needs a better public education than the one I received.
I'm also in Ward 5, but the bottom part much closer to Ward 6.

Not OOB at some of the better schools, no. But your IB school is obligated to take your child at Kindergarten.

Many of the charters expand slightly at Kindergarten. You may have better luck there. IDK where you live/where you were looking, but I bet you have a shot at somewhere decent. WotP, probably not. Bancroft or Ross, probably not. But there are lots of other schools that are worth a look.

Umm, Bancroft? Why? Couldn't get into HD Cooke? There are better options in Takoma Park than that.

Um, because Bancroft is hard to get into unless you are in-boundary or have a sibling there. You might not consider it a school where you would want to send your child, but lots of people want dual language. We applied a few years ago and our waitlist number was in the 200s. So, yeah.

And what on earth does Takoma Park have to do with Bancroft or HD Cooke? Takoma is nowhere near those schools. Tubman is, but I'm guessing that one's not on your list.

Random point that might be apparent to everyone (but me) - in addition to looking at which schools had wait listed siblings or IB last year also make sure you look at whether the school admitted any OOB students. A less sought after school might have waitlsited IB because IB parents put the school lower on their lists and then got admitted OOB to anther school. Because DCPS won't admit you to two or more schools, the child was necessarily waitlisted at the IB school.

Also keep in mind that this chart reflects only the initial results. Wait lists move. No, you won't get into Janney off the waitlist OOB but there are plenty of schools on here where more (or more to the point, different) OOB students got in eventually.

My kid is in-boundary at a very desirable school. One of the ones mentioned up thread that people said is not worth applying to. But there were out of boundary children accepted this year in Pre-K in October or later. There is a lot of movement after the initial lottery results come out and especially once the school year starts. If you get a reasonably high number (I don't know, 50 or lower?) you may have a shot if you're willing to move after the school year starts. Don't despair over the initial lottery numbers!

PP, thanks for posting and I appreciate your encouragement. But I have to ask...do you think the OOB children who got in after the start of the year were truly OOB or actually siblings of OOB children already attending the school. If by chance you were talking about Janney, if you look at the data there were 28 inboundary children who were waitlisted and 5 siblings of current OOB students waitlisted for PreK. It's hard to imagine that 33 familes declined spots that would have enabled any truly OOB kids in. I realize that I'm assuming you might be talking about Janney. But most of the other "very desirable" schools show similar numbers

This is PP - I wasn't talking about Janney, so I don't know about the situation there. But the OOB kids (two of them, I think) who got into my kid's class were not siblings.

The pdf is helpful, but I don't see if it shows out of the # of ppl who were waitlisted - how much did that wait list move? For example if there were 25 people initially wait listed for IN boundry, no sib preference, how many of those people eventually got a spot? How far into the wait list did it go, basically.

Sometimes OOB students are placed in "good"schools because there school isn't a "good" school and every student deserves a good education. If a parent complains enough central office will get involved and move a student to a desirable school.

Also for preschool, we've had out of bounds kids with special needs placed through childfind (or whatever its called). The kids appear to have very minor special needs to me, and fit in very well with the other kids.

Here are some 2012 Preschool and Pre-K Lottery Schools with particularly high numbers of waitlisted students with some preference. I also totaled all waitlisted students for each of these grades with some preference over straight-OOB applicants. e.g., in-bounds, in-bounds with sibling, out-of-bounds with proximity preference, or out-of-bounds with a sibling in the school
Of these, particularly bad ratios of seats to preference applicants who ended up waitlisted are at: Bancroft in Pre-K (14 seats, 20 waitlisted with preference), Barnard Pre-K (16 seats, 10 waitlisted with preference), Brent PS (38/21), Brightwood Pre-K (15/16), Bruce-Monroe Pre-K (5/14), Cleveland Dual Language PS (15/9) and Pre-K (4/3), Cleveland PS (14/11) and Pre-K (5/9) Francis-Stevens PS (22/22) Pre-K (0/20), Garrison PS (30/13) Pre-K (1/13), Cooke PS (30/28), Hyde Pre-K (19/32), JO Wilson Pre-K (0/15), Lafayette Pre-K (76/22), LaSalle PS (24/16) and Pre-K (4/21), Mann Pre-K (17/27), Marie Reed Dual language PS (15/9) Pre-K (7/7), Maury PS (35/52) Pre-K (13/6), Miner Pre-K (9/8), Murch Pre-K (57/36), Oyster Pre-K (32/32), Payne PS (30/18), Peabody PS (45/81) Pre-K (44/29), Powell Pre-K (3/16), Raymond Pre-K (14/10), Ross PS (14/21) Pre-K (4/8), SWS Pre-K (38/21), Simon Pre-K (3/5), Stanton Pre-K (8/5), Stoddert PS (38/26), Thomson PS (31/15) Pre-K (0/23), Truesdell PS (30/19) Pre-K (8/33), Tyler PS (30/15), Walker-Jones Pre-K (0/8), Wheatley Pre-K (4/10), Whittier Pre-K (7/10), Winston PS (15/8) Pre-K (5/5)
