PSA: 2012 lottery results

As you are choosing your magic 6 schools for the DCPS lottery, you might want to consult the 2012 lottery results to see if the school you are considering is worth "spending" a slot on.

If you are OOB for a school that had waitlisted siblings last year, you might want to reconsider whether to bother with the lottery for that school.

someone should write up those lists:

1. PS3 schools with waitlisted in-bounds
2. PS3 schools with waitlisted siblings
3. PK4 schools with waitlisted in-bounds
4. PK4 schools with waitlisted siblings

wish I had the time!

The problem with waitlisted IB students is that if a student got into a program listed higher in preference order than his/her IB school, s/he is put on the top of the waitlist. It's possible to find out whether this is the case for each student on the waitlist, but that's an even bigger time sink.

Thanks for the link!

Omg. I'm never going to get my kid a kindergarten spot, am I?

Not OOB at some of the better schools, no. But your IB school is obligated to take your child at Kindergarten.

Many of the charters expand slightly at Kindergarten. You may have better luck there. IDK where you live/where you were looking, but I bet you have a shot at somewhere decent. WotP, probably not. Bancroft or Ross, probably not. But there are lots of other schools that are worth a look.

West of the park is where I'm looking. My in bounds school is not an option, obviously, or I wouldn't be worried.

Oh, yeah. Sorry. Barring a miracle, it's not happening. Most of those schools are over-enrolled. Now you know!

Well I'll pray And then try the charters. And then pray some more.

Oh god. Why I am even bothering to submit a list? This is insanity! I'm Ward 5 with no decent IB options, and it doesn't look like OOB is actually happening.

So. How do you even begin to rank these things? Do I rank the schools that I might have a snowball's chance in first (like Langdon and Burroughs and Takoma), or do I rank the "better" ones that everyone else wants first (SWS, Peabody, Logan Montessori)?

Unless your child is in an older grade (3,4,5) sorry, but WOP ain't happening, sister. You really should look at the data. WOP schools can't even accomodate siblings of OOB kids. And for PK, WOP schools can't even accomodate all their in-bounds families. In fact, some WOP elementaries are adopting "no OOB" policies for certain grades. Period. Janney did it last year.

Umm, Bancroft? Why? Couldn't get into HD Cooke? There are better options in Takoma Park than that.

If you are unwilling to go to your IB, are there any DCPS possiblities that are in proximity to you? If so, I would strongly consider ranking it first or near first because that will be the only school you have any preference for. Apparently DCPS is changing the way the OOB waitlist is handled this year...if you get into a school you are then bumped off the waitlists for all the other schools on your list that are ranked behind that school you got into. The idea is you got something you wanted so no need to hold a waitlist spot for you on schools you didn't want as much. So you need to be very thoughtful about the order of your rankings. Think about not only what school you want most, but also which schools will truly work for you and your family in terms of commute, before and aftercare availability, etc. Good luck.
