List of Spanish Immersion Schools?

Test scores are horrible, not a single white student attends either. I can count about 12 children within two blocks of me and not one would even consider that school for kindergarten. but would love to get into Oyster...

Exactly. Same goes for Bancroft. Spanish Immersion is being touted as some sort of desirable option by schools which are Spanish-language anyway. These schools have such a high percentage of ESL students, that English is the exception, not the norm. Go ahead and enroll your student with the expectation that her street Spanish will be terrific. Her Spanish literacy may leave a lot to be desired, given that the majority of her classmates's parents are illiterate in their own language. Her English will be absolutely horrible unless you dedicate yourself to home-schooling.

The best are (alpha order):

LAMB (charter - feeds to DCI) http://www.lambpcs.org/
Mundo Verde (charter - feeds to DCI) http://mundoverdepcs.org/
Oyster (DCPS - feeds to Oyster MS and Deal) http://profiles.dcps.dc.gov/oyster-adams+bilingual+school
Stokes (charter - feeds to DCI) http://www.ewstokes.org/

Although, I agree with your list, I wouldn't want the OP to be under the assumption that Stokes feeds into DCI. Stokes doesn't feed into any secondary school at the minute. I'm a current Stoeks parent and I hope, with all my heart, we will feed into DCI (at least it sounds very promising), but at the minute we do not feed into any school. Therefore, the OP should know that she will have to paly the lottery, once again, if Stokes doesn't join up with the other schools for DCI.

Stokes is slated to put in the charter amendment in January to be a part of DCI

PP, You just made my day! I'm out of the loop, obviously! Thanks for the good news.

What's the difference between a "bilingual" school and an "immersion" school?

Also (perhaps we need a new thread) what other languages are represented in DCPS -- French? Chinese? Any others?

Yu Ying -- Chinese
Stokes -- French

Not sure of any DCPS options for languages other than Spanish

I hope someone could start a real Chinese school in the city.

This is not true. Stokes is still considering the proposal to join DCI, but is in the process of their 15-year charter renewal. They will not amend their charter until this is complete.

At first I couldn't understand what "Spinach" immersion was. What is next? Broccoli therapy?

Wasn't there a poster who claimed to start a Chinese school giving preference to ABCs on a YY thread earlier? Is anything happening with that?

Of course not, that's just someone with an axe to grind. Giving preference based on race is against the law.

It would be nice to have a Chinese-language charter that emphasized traditional Chinese characters.

What type of Chinese characters does YY emphasize? There is my ignorance, I didn't know there was any other kind of character for Mandarin Chinese than traditional... what other kind is there and what does YY teach?
