| Hi there - is there a list of schools with a spanish immersion program? I can't seem to find it on the DCPS website. I don't really want to read up on every single elementary school to check, but I will if that's the best way to find them. Thanks for any help. |

Bancroft Elem.
Bruce-Monroe Elem. @ ParkView Cleveland Elem. Marie Reed Learning Center Oyster-Adams Bilingual Elem. Powell Elem. Tyler Elementary LAMB Mundo Verde |

I think that DCPS has bilingual schools, not immersion ones. Those I know about:
Oyster (the only way in as an English-dominant child is to live in-bounds) Powell. Cleveland. |
|
10:45 here: obviously, 10:43 is more on the ball than I. Two notes:
LAMB and Mundo Verde are charters. A third charter I know of: EW Stokes (also has a French program) |
| Charters = Mary Mcleoud Bethune |
The best are (alpha order): LAMB (charter - feeds to DCI) http://www.lambpcs.org/ Mundo Verde (charter - feeds to DCI) http://mundoverdepcs.org/ Oyster (DCPS - feeds to Oyster MS and Deal) http://profiles.dcps.dc.gov/oyster-adams+bilingual+school Stokes (charter - feeds to DCI) http://www.ewstokes.org/ |

OP here - thanks so much everyone!
and yes, I think I was using the term immersion when I maybe meant bilingual. We're new to the DCPS school system and to lingo for the types of learning programs. I really appreciate all the help. |
Look very carefully at their scores. Just because they are all bilingual, doesn't mean they are at all equal. |
| Right, look very carefully at the % low income students. LAMB is low (24%) while Bancroft is high (80%), and this is reflected in the scores. This is what determines scores, people. |
|
Each school defines immersion differently. Some have 90% Spanish in PS/PK. Some 50/50. The schools aren't comparable on a lot of levels. Location, size, demographics, scores.
Lots of us apply to all of the lotteries. What grade are you looking for OP? |
| Its funny how an inital questions turns into a different topic. She asked about the DCPS schools that are Spanish immersion, not whihc ones are better bla bla bla. |
| I think this is a very tricky distinction. I live in bounds for Park View/Bruce Monroe elem and I would say its "immersion" only by default. I think over 60% of the students are ESL. Test scores are horrible, not a single white student attends either. I can count about 12 children within two blocks of me and not one would even consider that school for kindergarten. but would love to get into Oyster... |
| Maybe non-white posters and white posters who don't give a damn about race are asking about bilingual programs. How about answering the question and leaving it at that? |
Again, you got it wrong. There are at least 2 whites in my kids 16-student class in PS3. And I only do drop-off once a week, really early, so not sure if there are more. Bruce Monroe definitely not perfect, but the kids are now speaking both English and Spanish, after only 3 months in. Their second language is not perfect, but it's getting better with each passing week. PS/PK instruction is done in English one day and Spanish the next. Spanish teachers are all native speakers. You hear Spanish in the hallways and is a welcoming environment. |
