Insane to run a marathon on no training?

Anonymous
My officemate (who ran 3-4 times/wk) gave herself a stress fracture and knee surgery thanks to a spur-of-the-moment MCM. She had run a half a few months prior...but that was nowhere near enough. She must have been just under 30 at the time.

Your DH sounds even less ready.

I'm a marathon runner and this is ridiculous. Maybe he can limp across the finish line at a snail's pace, but why bother? If he wants to run a marathon, it will be a much better experience if he trains for it a little bit. My rule of thumb is at least three 20 mile training runs in the months leading up to the marathon. Certainly you can do less, but by less I don't mean 8 miles...

If he does run it, please let us know how it goes for him.

Agree it is a stupid idea. I ran a marathon on no training, but I had run two previously so I knew what I was getting myself into.

Can be done, but you have to pace yourself into a walk/run rythm. Walk for 1 min every 8 mins and through the water stops.
I have heard of a top ultra runner who has 5 min breaks every 25 mins and has still made it to the elite level.

You got to have the patience to start slow and to not rush

If he insists on running, please have him invest in some body glide. The last thing he wants is a pair of cracked, bleeding nipples.

Dumb. While there are some rare folks who could do this, the vast majority cannot. The Post did an article a couple years back about how the body changes during training for endurance events. Without the training, almost everyone (save the few people) are guaranteed to fail, and get hurt in the process.

I dont think this is all that bad. He's not going to do very well and will likely have to walk but assuming he doesn't push himself to the brink, he should be ok in the long run. He likely won't enjoy himself or fiNd it a very rewarding experience though.

My DH usually runs half-marathons, but has run three marathons, and for each, put in a tremendous amount of time training. They are not little 'fun runs', they are serious business. If your DH wants to try, OP, my prediction is that he won't make it too far, and may end up hurting himself in the process. Just tell him to stay not to collapse in front of all the people who take this seriously and have been working hard for months to get ready for it.

"weekend warrior" means husband falls over dead.

You can tell him it's ridiculous or you can let him try it and figure that out for himself.

If it was my husband I would absolutely let him run - purely to be able to say "I told you so!"

22:46 here again. I think many of you are being a bit dramatic here. Maybe he "runs" it and walks quite a bit. No big deal. Plenty of people walk. If he finds it impossible- as many of you predict- then he drops out. It doesn't seem like a good idea to me but I dont think its super dumb. Its just not the marathon experience that people train for.

Go for it! He will have a blast.

Sure, you can walk...some...but you have to keep a 14 minute per mile pace, or the straggler bus will come for you!

Ha! 22:46 again. This is true. While he might not be risking life and limb by running, is might have to endure the shame of the straggler bus. Funny, PP. I've never heard it called that. LOL.

Coat the man down in Body Glide. His nipples and junk are going to take a beating with the humidity.

I ran a marathon (I am female) with very little training. I finished, but couldn't walk properly for days. I had stress fractures. I did finish, with a decent time.
