Schedule D&C or wait to miscarry?

The D&C is quick and they put you under so it is not painful. I have always found them very easy to recover from. It's usually a day or two and I'm back on my feet. Plus, you can get back to TTC much sooner, if that is important to you, and you don't have to endure pregnancy symptoms for weeks (mine continue until my betas are below 5) or feel like you are walking around with this tragedy inside you, which in my opinion, is the worst part of it.

00:53, you may want to consider limiting your comments to things you actually know about. The kind of misinformation you are spewing is mean, inaccurate, and damaging.

I guess I just take some Advil and bring a lot of pads and make it through te day somehow. I don't know that there's anything else I can do. I can't cancel these appointments bc rescheduling would be a nightmare.

Sorry OP - As an aside, I used to be as busy as you (former a lawyer w/solo practice). My advice is, after you get through this, you may want to consider restructuring your worklife balance, maybe even find a different job that is far less demanding. Having a baby is extremely time consuming, oh my goodness. It's like having an appointment every morning and nite.

OP, I'm so sorry, and I'm so sorry you have to see clients while going through this. Please take care of yourself and try to reschedule if you can. Make sure you see your doctor in a couple days to make sure that everything has come out - sometimes people who miscarry naturally still need D&Cs.

For anyone who looks at this in the future, my D&C and recovery was mostly pain-free (physically, that is), so I would definitely go that route.

I wouldn't have been as blunt as the PP you are quoting, but I do agree with her. If you haven't had a D&C or if you don't actually know anything about it, you shouldn't be answering this question. And if you don't understand why comparing this to an abortion is horribly mean and insensitive, then I just don't know what to tell you.

Thanks so much to everyone who has posted here. It's very helpful to have the support. I made it through the day in appointments. Around noon, I had to lift something heavy and felt myself passing something HUGE. It was just a huge blood clot, like nothing I've ever seen. I've been bleeding on and off since, and I'm starting to get more crampy now. I've already been bleeding for a week, but took progesterone supplements for one week after we saw the heartbeat on u/s. So, now that I'm off progesterone, I guess it's easier for my body to miscarry. I will call my OB tomorrow to see what he thinks I should do at this point. Like one of the above posters wrote, I really don't want this to drag on for weeks. I agree that would just cause additional pain, and would mean that this would take a whole lot longer to get over.

PP here. (The blunt one. Please call your doc tomorrow. He will want you to come in for bloodwork and an ultrasound. That will help them get a sense of how much tissue is left and whether a D&C would still be helpful. You may need to clear your schedule for that. In the meantime, please take care of yourself. And try not to exercise. It stimulates blood flow and can make things go longer. No more lifting!

Thanks! Will do.

Not sure if this is still relevant but I miscarried at 11 weeks and had a D&C. I didn't have a choice but the D&C ended up being somewhat therapeutic. It was over quickly and painlessly and the hospital staff was really kind and compassionate. I had almost no recovery or bleeding and waking up the next day it felt like I could start with a clean start and it was a relief to see things look normal again a week later. Of course, waiting for my HCG levels to drop back to 0 and the emotional piece was another story but that sucks regardless. Sorry for your loss. Its so hard.

OP here again. It really sounds like everyone prefers the D&C to natural m/c. Is there anyone who has been through this and m/c wasn't really that bad?

OP, I was told I was going to miscarry somewhere around 5.5 weeks. Transvaginal ultrasound and normal ultrasound could find no heartbeat. I was to schedule a D&C for the following week or choose to wait. It was extremely agonizing emotionally. I chose to wait and went to a new OB a few days later. Heartbeat was very strong and there was my little peanut. It astonishes me still, 2.5 years later and looking at my amazing healthy son, how quickly the hospital was to tell me I was going to miscarry.
I'm no expert in this whatsoever- as that was my first and so far only child and pregnancy- but I would wait at least a week or so and see what happens and in the meantime seek a second opinion.

21:36 - I am already bleeding, and passing huge clots. They found a heartbeat last week, but embryo only measured 5 weeks 2 days and I should have been 6.5 -7 weeks. I was hopeful, even so. But I started bleeding last Monday. The ultrasound with heartbeat was last Tuesday, the day after bleeding started. I had another u/s this Tuesday (yesterday) which showed no heartbeat. So, as much as I wish it weren't so, there is no hope for this pregnancy.

OP - please ignore this poster. She has posted this BS several times on threads about D&Cs. 5.5 weeks is often too early to find a heartbeat on an ultrasound - no one would recommend a D&C based on not finding a heartbeat at 5.5 weeks. Most OBs don't even do ultrasounds until 7-8 weeks for this reason.

I call bull. Its actually common NOT to see a heartbeat at 5.5 weeks. At 5.6 weeks all they saw during my pregnant was a yolk sac. I was told not to worry, it was common and to come back a week later. Lo and behold a heart beat.

PP again (blunt one ). You can't tell if someone is going to miscarry simply by looking at a 5.5 week ultrasound and what your first doctor did was unspeakably bad medicine. Miscarriage is diagnosed based on a number of factors - bleeding, betas going down or going up slower than they should, ultrasound shows a shrinking (not growing) sac/fetus, no heartbeat, etc. The doctor monitors these things over time and if things get worse, not better, then they diagnose miscarriage. I've had eight miscarriages and no one has ever concluded I was going to miscarry based on a baseline ultrasound at less than 6 weeks. That's just nuts. You need many more data points than that. I'm really sorry you had that frightening experience, but you're situation really isn't comparable.
