OP, I was told I was going to miscarry somewhere around 5.5 weeks. Transvaginal ultrasound and normal ultrasound could find no heartbeat. I was to schedule a D&C for the following week or choose to wait. It was extremely agonizing emotionally. I chose to wait and went to a new OB a few days later. Heartbeat was very strong and there was my little peanut. It astonishes me still, 2.5 years later and looking at my amazing healthy son, how quickly the hospital was to tell me I was going to miscarry. I'm no expert in this whatsoever- as that was my first and so far only child and pregnancy- but I would wait at least a week or so and see what happens and in the meantime seek a second opinion.
PP again (blunt one :-)). You can't tell if someone is going to miscarry simply by looking at a 5.5 week ultrasound and what your first doctor did was unspeakably bad medicine. Miscarriage is diagnosed based on a number of factors - bleeding, betas going down or going up slower than they should, ultrasound shows a shrinking (not growing) sac/fetus, no heartbeat, etc. The doctor monitors these things over time and if things get worse, not better, then they diagnose miscarriage. I've had eight miscarriages and no one has ever concluded I was going to miscarry based on a baseline ultrasound at less than 6 weeks. That's just nuts. You need many more data points than that. I'm really sorry you had that frightening experience, but you're situation really isn't comparable.
