Paraben-free/other yucky chemical-free deodorant that actually works?

I swear by the Arm & Hammer "Essentials" deodorant. I can't wear antiperspirant so I have tried all kinds of aluminum-free deodorants, from Tom's to that crystal stuff. Arm & Hammer actually works for me: no stink.

I use the "Naturally Fresh" roll on first (it has a blue top, and I get it at Whole Foods) and then Tom's of Maine deodorant stick (nonscented). My gardener swore by the combo (he's a crunchy organic type) so I figured if it would work for him while he did hard labor it would do right by me.

I use my husband's deoderant, it's not an antiperspirant and I like the manly smell. I have tried going deoderant free and I also use organic detergent and this does nothing to stop my odor. I have very bad odor like a man. I have to shower every day and wear deoderant every day to keep it under control.

Ugh. I just bought some natural deodorant at WF today and now I'm bummed. I really would love a natural anti-persperant but unless I want to continue to aluminum thing, ugh.

I did just read online a recipe for homemade deodorant. Baking soda, arrowroot or cornstarch & coconut oil. Add essential oil to get the scent you like.

It is very hard to find regular non anti-perspirant deodorant. I use the Burt's Bees spray deodorant and it's quite effective. I also use the Mennen regular deodorant, which is what my husband and sons use as well. The only time I get stinky is when I work out really hard (I sweat buckets, but I don't mind that), and then I shower immediately, so it's not so much of an issue.

Theoretically, cutting out the anti-perspirant for a few weeks *should* decrease the amount of sweat.
Theoretically, eating no meat, garlic, etc, should ameliorate the smell.

But when I stress or when I am overheated - forget it

Looking for nontoxic products! I switched to Arbonne. I use Arbonne's foot cream...wiped out my daughter's arm pit order when nothing else worked! If you don't have an odor problem the deodorant is fabulous! The non toxic toothpaste is amazing too!

Take a look...www.arbonne.com.

I think this is the case for many women, though they won't admit it.

I use Crystal Essence roll on. I buy it at iHerb. It has worked in the midst of a hot Hong Kong summer so that means it really does work!

I don't think Lush is paraben-free, is it?

As for me, I give my pits a break at least one day and sometimes two on the weekend unless I'm going out in the evening. I've noticed that stress sweat smells worse than everyday sweat, so I don't have too much of a problem.

I've done this and it is true. Anti-perspirant *tries* to prevent sweating, which means all the toxins in your body can't get out. When you do sweat, you smell. When you stop using deodorant, you may sweat more and smell worse at first, but your body will adjust. After you have adjusted, try a natural deodorant (I bought something from Etsy) and also have used Welda Spray Deodorant. I still sweat, and sometimes smell, but I feel better about my choices. If I need to, I can always use regular deodorant. Also, drink lots of water and try to eat healthy - meats and sweets do make you smell worse when you sweat.

Is there any scientific basis for this theory? I only ask b/c it has NOT been true in my experience. MY DH has 2 relatives (randomly, they don't live together or anything) who don't use deodorant, and they both REEK of B.O. I think they shower a normal amount and wear clean clothes, and they don't smell dirty or anything, but they do both have that unmistakable underarm odor, and it is strong. I think maybe they just don't smell it b/c they are used to it, but believe me everyone else does.

Arm and hammer free (or one without aluminum and parabens) works best for me. Toms and Jason didn't.

I thought that I smelled worse when I had that "deodorant funk" than I do when my sweat is fresh. If it's grossly hot out everyone smells and it's easier to go into the bathroom and give your pits a rinse with soap and water. When I used to reapply deodorant it would just mask it with a gross smell and my stink would seep through eventually anyway.
