It made me very scared. I'm only being slightly paranoid, but this is how dictatorships start. Continuously feed people falsehoods that the press doesn't have the balls to say are *lies* and eventually you have an misinformed majority (and some folks who know what's real but actually support these ideas) that gives you power. I'm truly scared for our nation. Not because of what the Repubs are doing and saying, but for the fact that they just don't get called on it. Lies are left to hang out there. The general public is not reading all these fact-checker sites. Everyone gets their news from a source that already aligns with their worldview, so they never hear both sides of the story. People hear Paul Ryan say something, and they're going to assume he's telling the truth. It started with Sarah Palin - she would repeat lies over and over. I guess they figured it was a successful strategy. |
The Democrats have already swung to the center. It's the Republican Party that's moving to the right so the center has moved as well.

Obama's unemployment graph.

I didn't start with Sarah - she was good at deflecting it with the whole "don't be mean, i'm just a simple country gal" crap. Bush and Cheney lied over and over and over again. And it goes back further than that, but they were pretty blatant about it. |
RNC delegate "offended" by Mexican.

Obama's Global Opinion has slipped. http://www.pewglobal.org/2012/06/13/global-opinion-of-obama-slips-international-policies-faulted/ |
Since when do you care what a bunch of fereners think about the U S of A??? And didn't you already post this and Jeff debunked it? |
This is exactly right. Other than increasing taxes on those making over $250,000 each year, VIrtually every one of Obama's major policy initiatives started as a REPUBLICAN proposal. Now, a mere 15-20 years later, they're advanced socialism and portend the end of the Republic. To say Democrats need to swing to the center when Republicans keep moving the Center towards the right is absurd. This article touches on a lot of great points: http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2012/06/25/120625fa_fact_klein |
Agreed, but it seemed like the press was doing a better job of letting people know what was true. Now, it just seems like all these people live in this alternate world where their perceived reality is totally different from the truth. Maybe that was always the case, not sure. |
Where have you been since Wens night? The media has done nothing BUT pick apart Ryan's speech, line by line, in an attempt to "expose" the untruths and misinformation. Read the WashPost from yesterday if you don't believe me. I think you're confusing this with the Obama message. |
Hmm . . . your family supported all the other Dem. presidents, but not Obama. Let's put their faces in a photo lineup and play "Which one is not like the other?" Oh, wait, I forgot, your family supported the civil rights movement. Riiiiight. BTW -- Obama's divisive? Or the USA has its share of racist, conspiracy-theory obsessed loonies that have focused their hate on Obama. |
My theory is Obama couldn't be progressive (push liberal programs) because his fundraising from big business would have dried up. I'm no policy wonk obviously, but I think he held back on purpose. If he has the good fortune to be reelected I think he would try swinging from center/center-right to center-left with a vengeance.
I sure hope he is reelected. D.C. is a very liberal town compared to the Midwest and the South...East Coasters don't realize how incredibly conservative these states are. It's truly frightening how much they hate the "so-called" liberal media, gays, and feminists. These angry, narrow-minded people want to pull the levers of power in this country. |
The political center would be the tax reform
Act of 86. Republicans would crap on that today. The political center was the Clinton era budgets. Republicans would crap on that today, too. The Dems offer to cut spending. That's their commitment to the center. Republicans will not budge an inch on taxes. That is right of Reagan. Right of the historical Center. So your out of town family has moved to the right since you were a kid. |
