The schools surrounding it will either be at or under capacity as well. Western Fairfax has the most overcrowded high schools within FCPS. South Lakes is proposed to be at 139%, Herndon at 121%, Oakton at 113%, Fairfax at 127% and Centerville at 119%. All of the schools surrounding these will also be at or over capacity so FCPS can't redistrict these students easily to other high schools. It seems there needs to be more done in Western Fairfax than just adding on small additions. Whether a charter school is good for the Stuart area or not is up for debate, but I don't think it should be approved to alleviate overcrowding in the eastern part of the County. Overcrowding at the high school level needs to be dealt with in Western Fairfax before the school board worries about Eastern Fairfax.

Is someone claiming the charter school in eastern Fairfax is needed to alleviate overcrowding in the high schools there? I thought the issues around the charter school were whether the school, which would occupy a soon-to-be-vacant elementary school building, would (1) serve the needs of at-risk students in eastern Fairfax and/or (2) have an adverse impact on Falls Church HS, if it leads to a reduction in that school's enrollment.

From what I've read, western Fairfax may soon need an additional high school, and eastern Fairfax may need more elementary school capacity, but I'm not sure what that has to do with the charter school proposal.

Simple responding to 17:45 commenting on their opinion that Stuart will be overcrowded in the near future. Also making a comment that additional funding for high school expansion should be directed toward western fairfax before funding improvements for a charter school in eastern Fairfax. If the charter school does not need facility improvements, it doesn't really matter funding wise. If eastern Fairfax County needs additional elementary schools though, why is one in that area proposed to be closed and turned into a high school?

The proposal is to put the charter in the old Graham Road ES building at the corner of Arlington Boulevard and Graham Road in Falls Church. The students are getting a new, larger building further up Graham Road towards Lee Highway. The greatest need for another ES in eastern Fairfax is expected to be over in the Baileys Crossroads area.
