The Tide is Shifting on Gay Marriage

Haven't you heard? The Hispanic population growth has leveled out and is even. There are now as many Hispanics leaving the country as entering. They are currently not a growing population in the US. With their numbers about steady, they are not going to be canceling out the changing ideals of the nation. In fact, many of the younger Hispanics that were raised in the US feel like their non-Hispanic counterparts and are also gradually becoming more accepting. You are a dying breed like the anti-interracial marriage folks. Unless you are over 60, it will probably be legally accepted in more than half the nation in your lifetime.

Certainly not the Catholics, we are about split on Gay Marriage.

Maybe you should try these people. They are a small but vocal group: http://www.aryan-nations.org/

"On Friday, the Washington Blade reported that the National Council of La Raza, the country’s largest Latino civil rights organization, has unanimously endorsed marriage equality."

Can't count on blacks, can't count on Latinos. Who can a homophobe trust these days?

People who hate gays are highly motivated to turn out. Doesnt make it right. The public opinion polls break in favor of gay marriage. If public opinion matters most then it should be legalized nationwide.

or the 54% majority who support it dont actually care enough to show up and vote.

Old people vote more than young people. This is a problem that will take care of itself. Each successive generation is trending more positive for gay marriage, and the people of each generation are getting more tolerant as they age. The eventual outcome is inevitable. Get used to it.

There's also the general trend that people tend to vote more conservatively as they age. Not necessarily on this particular topic, but some of you younger DCUMers may find yourselves growing more conservative as you get older. Imagine that!

But on this particular issue, the data says that it is not true.

This graph clearly shows that the same cohort of people has not become increasingly conservative as they have aged. http://features.pewforum.org/same-sex-marriage-attitudes/slide2.php For example, the boomers are more conservative than Gen X, but they are not getting more conservative as the years go by.

So the lesson here is that the old adage does not seem to apply on social issues the same way that it does regarding economic ones. And the reason is that a person's economic standing changes dramatically over their lifetime.

So if you want a party that will catch voters as they age, strip out the oppressive social agenda and get back to basics: fiscal conservatism, low taxes, a retrenched foreign policy and respect for individual liberty.

I'm over 70, in favor of everyone having the right to marry the person he or she loves, of women having the right to control their own bodies, even if I disapprove of the choices they make, and just as pro-union as I ever was.

I am extremely conservative, though, when it comes to conserving my liberal view of the world.

19:02 here. I appreciate your sense of humor and agree with your last statement (as long as we maintain a strong enough military to protect the USA).

There is no scenario under which we would possibly threaten the safety of the USA. The "devastating cuts" under the last budget deal's automatic triggers would merely reduce the rate of growth. We would still be about half of the military power of the entire planet. Seems like a lot to defend a country with the Atlantic on one side, the Pacific on the other, Canada to the North and Mexico to the south.

No. The outside study of the church abuse case determined that it was not a gay thing.

It's not. The media just highlights the boy sex crimes and pornography more. Just like there are many abduction/kidnapping/disappearances, but the white young females (Elizabeth Smart, Natalie Holloway, Chandra Levy) are disproportionately highlighted by the media. In actuality, girls are more likely to be victimized by child pornography and child molestation than boys. It's just give less air time.

Pedophile priests have more opportunity with boys. They are alone with them more. Lots of girls were affected too. Read the John Jay university report if you want to see how they studied this.
