TTC same cycle as HSG test -- what has your doctor told you?

Anonymous
I definetly concieved AFTER the HSG. I had it done cd8, O'd cd12 and had a bfp at 12dpo. Miscariage at 6 weeks. My OB never told me not to try that month - she even encouraged it.

I have had three miscarriages. My one healthy pregnancy was the same cycle as an SHG (a saline sonogram, not an HSG). For me, I think I had some endometriosis that it helped clear enough to aid implantation.

I think the correlation between miscarriage and HSG is more because only women having trouble conceiving have HSGs. And those women might be having more miscarriages than the regular populace.

I was told to TTC immediately, but it didn't work for me.

It's fine to try the same cycle - as long as the HSG is prior to conception. But per my doc it no longer increases chances of pregnancy - something about a change in what they use - what they used to use did, but what they use now does not.

I also had an early mc the cycle of an hsg. I do think the hsg helped me get the bfp (no luck for a year before it) Not sure whether it contributed to the early m/c. 1 year later and am now doing ivf.

I had an hsg but did not conceive afterward.

They said after no problem but none before. In reading this I get it. I wonder if the dye and radiation damage any sperm in you which could go on and fertilize an egg since they live for 3-5 days? Granted I would have thought the HSG would have washed any sperm out?

I think it's bc if you were pregnant then this would cause a miscarriage. Basically, the dye would sweep everything away. That's also why my RE wanted it done early in my cycle way before ovulation and also made me take an HPT just before the procedure.

True. Both Kaiser and sgfc do HSG between day 5 and 12 and require a pregnancy test prior to test. Just surprised that Kaiser said no unprotected sex before.

I also miscarried at six weeks having conceived right after my HSG. It was my only miscarriage surrounded by months of trying without success.

After a year of trying for my second child, I got pregnant the second cycle after my HSG. She's one now.

My OB said that the first three cycles of the HSG see an uptick in conceiving.

The nurse who helped with my HSG said she definitely hears about pregnancies after. I tried for 14 months and conceived 10 days after my HSG. 18 weeks tomorrow, so fingers crossed. My sister tried for a year, then had 3 failed IUIs and had an HSG prior to her 4th IUI. She conceived her (healthy) twins that cycle.

Pp here. Also, I had mine done at a hospital with blue cross coverage. They required bloodwork showing I was not pregnant before and required no unprotected sex to ensure I wasn't pregnant at exam. I read a study indicating different outcomes for women who are pregnant at the time of exam, but they don't want to risk causing a miscarriage with the process.

its understood that they don't want you pregnant BEFORE the HSG. But the issue that is murky is getting pregnant the cycle OF the HSG. (also yes we know that you are fertile for 3 months afterwards). I myself had a miscarriage at 6 weeks from a pregnancy conceived immediately after (5 days) my HSG so I wonder if there is something to it. No one informed me that I should wait a month.

Pp here who is 18 weeks. Early on my doctor told me I had about an 35% miscarriage risk due to my age. So, since HSG are on women with difficulty conceiving and that often corresponds to age, couldn't miscarriage rates be factors other than HSG?

Yes it's fine to try, even encouraged based on anecdotal evidence. I don't think there is reliable experimental evidence at this point. I'm doing ivf at a top research school and they are running a randomized control trial on whether endometrial scratches help.
