Why are sky high platform heels so popular now and just who is wearing them?

I think as long as you can walk (ie heel to toe stride, not mincing along, placing your foot flat) they are awesome. I definitely don't think of them as stripper shoes, but I do think they can look inappropriate with the wrong ensemble or at the wrong time.

My husband and I were LOLing and wincing in embarrassment at a couple shopping for a couple last minute items on easter at the new Bethesda Safeway. We could hear them talking and it was evident she was 'meeting the family' for the first time. They both looked pulled together otherwise, but too bad she had platform stilettos on and couldn't walk; these shoes were inappropriate. She, sadly, looked like a dumb whore and was definitely going to be judged by his Jesus freak family. He didn't die for our sins so we could dress like whores, after all.

I just don't think they're right for the DC area. Some bars maybe, but mostly DC is just too conservative. There is one really short girl at my work who wears them. Not appropriate, but I think she just wants to make herself as tall as possible. In NYC or Cali, they can be pulled off easily I think.

Agreed - small platform, on trend, giant platform - looks like sh*t.

And I'm sorry - there is NOTHING sexy about a girl wobbling around on the sidewalk trying to walk ... I love my heels, but please don't wear them if you can't walk in them!

Love the small platform. It adds cushion for the ball of my foot and is really so much more comfortable. Also, the heel is not as tall as it appears. because of the platform so they are actually much easier to walk in.

I agree the big platforms can range from looking awkward to trashy.

I don't understand how women can wear those and not fall ... I've only had 2.5-inch heels at highest, so I'm obviously not practiced in taller shoes. But still...

And thats the big secret. I used to think women were crazy too until I tried on a pair. Now they're my fav going out shoes!

As mentioned, the platform easily takes 2-2.5" off the heel so its not bad. So you take a 5 inch stilletto and the platform takes it to a 3 inch heel (or less). Plus you're cute as hell.

I'm 28. Agree about the chunky platforms, they're ugly.

why?

You can't walk from the lot to the door in these?

these are horrendous, they look terrible

What about shoes like these worn by LeAnn Rimes ... Not sure I could wear them, way too tall for me:

I am 23, a new Mom, and I love tall all of my platform heels. They make my legs look great and I can walk in them perfectly. They actually do not hurt my feet at all. The heels I own that have little to no platform hurt much more. I think it is ridiculous that women cannot embrace other women. I am not a stripper and never have been. I get tons of compliments on my heels and how amazing they look. We need to embrace every kind of woman....from a frumpy lesbian, to a frumpy straight woman, to a stylish Mother, a tall woman, a short woman, a sexy woman. Be glad that we can pick and choose what we wear and be happy that we have that right. Try no to bash others based on what they look like. Embrace it.

In confused. Apparently super hot women married to 80s style georgetown chets "I want a stripper in the bedroom and a lady at 1789" types do not wear them, but I have been informed that such women are hotter and sexier than I can ever dream of being, not to mention beautiful, classy and very very young, so I'm just going to write them off as unattainable. I bet you are a veritable cross between a vs angel and jackie o, you young special snowflake you. Thank you for gracing this board of old 30 ish hags with your beauty and charm.

Other very young women love them because they are also super hotter than us old judgy moms will ever be. So, hmm. Pearls and pumps like the pompous ass young thing or stripper shoes like the trashy one? Tough call.

Especially when skanky girls wear them with jeans. Gross.

Wear a nice pair of heels, but not the kind with the 3 inch platform up front--- it's gross. Especially if you are going to a respectable nice dinner in DC/Georgetown. Dress nice--- dress beautiful, don't dress like a stripper.

My husband wants the stripper at home swinging around our 4 poster bed, he doesn't want to take the stripper to 1789 in Gtown.

Actually, they remind me of porno shoes. I see young women, early to mid 20s wearing them in DC during the work day. They lumber up and down as they walk and it looks so unprofessional
