has DCUM changed the way you view people?

I've started to think all Wiccans are screaming meanies, and many atheists. I know it's a sample of 1 for the Wiccans, but I have no other information on this point except from DCUM. Of course DCUM also has some nuts from all the major world religions, but with these others there's at least a fairly wide range of reasonableness and niceness, so it's harder to judge the groups as a whole.

I know a number of very nice Wiccans (I am not one.) I think your sample size might be too small on this one.

I've learned that white women aren't as submissive, proper and prim as they appear. While they play the shrinking violet in public, they are hell cats behind a computer screen.

They are the ultimate "angry woman".

How can you tell race and gender from a post?

Quite possibly, and I'm definitely open to meeting a nice Wiccan. Until that happens, though us Bayesians go on what we know.

It's usually revealed along the way....obviously.

For me it's different. I already had a jaded view of human nature. However, all the snarky and truly funny comments that appear on occasion here have made me rethink my view of DC as being full of dour people.

Take the penis thread. I don't know any man who would talk that way in real life. I just got such a kick out of that one. It made me realize all the uptight people I sit in meetings with might be hiding very funny thoughts.

It reinforced how little I think about the so many bitter here!

I never realized how much vitrol there was towards Catholics.

I often wonder which of the women I run into at work, on the metro, grocery stores etc are DCUM posters. I think I can spot them.

I'll say! Towards Mormons, too. I'm not either religion, FWIW. I always wonder how many DCUM posters have some sort of deep-seated rage, and they need a target so they don't scream at DH or the kids.

I moved here thinking I'd make friends like anywhere, have good relationships- and I see from DCUM that most likely, that's not going to happen. I might develop some friendships, but I highly doubt they will be life-long lasting ones. I also realized people here are so much more superficial than I ever thought, and now it occurs to me to be self conscious about things that never would have occurred to me in the past. In short, DCUM has given me a far less generous view on people in DC.

You do realize that many of the people who post on here aren't even living in DC? And that "population that posts on DCUM" does not equal "people who live in DC"? I can imagine the people who spend time on DCUM are such a minute slice of the people who live in DC, that I am astounded that anyone would actually think that the attitudes on here are respresentative of DC as a whole. To say that based on what you have read on an anonymous public internet board, you have determined that "the people here" are "so much more superficial" and to assume that you're not going to make any lasting friendships and to extrapolate these posts to a general "far less generous view on people in DC" is just bizarre. Really? You believe that the people on DCUM are wholly representative of the DC population?

Clearly I'm also representative of the entire DC population. And excuse me for being upset when people make sweeping generalizations about the entire population of a city that I dearly love and in which I have made many friends. I maintain that it is absolutely ridiculous to say that you have not made any friends in a large urban area because they all act in real life like every single entitled nasty person on DC Urban Moms. And nevermind the absolute fact that there are many people who get useful, thoughtful feedback on real issues from the posters here. For every purposefully obnoxious poster, there's someone out there who genuinely posts because he or she wants to help.
