Well, I used to live in Kingstowne (Alexandria) and had a neighbor who basically did the same thing. I've move now...the dogs in Kingstowne were one of the main reasons why we didn't like it there.

Not Kingstowne but yes, a townhouse. We actually like dogs, but this guy is awful. Actually our neighborhood is really really dog oriented, but I never see anyone else walking their dogs without leashes. Then again, some of the people where we live are more tolerant of dogs than they are of babies, and that IS annoying. But I digress....

OP, what exactly is it about the dogs off-leash that is disturbing to you and DH? I know there is a leash law, but are they bothering you in some way? (Scary, using your front lawn, etc?)

I'm asking because we have several neighbors who walk their dogs off leash, and it does annoy me since the dogs race around my yard, front and back. All the houses sit on over an acre, so they're not even close to the owners. Haven't done anything about it yet, since they're not REALLY bothering us...(eg not pooping in the yard, or scaring the kids).

17:46 - I share your sentiment. If they are not doing anything, then let it be, no?

I'm not 17:46, but honestly, I don't care if the off-leash dogs aren't bothering me *right now.* I don't want them to suddenly change their mind (because of a squirrel or a kid or a smaller dog or a misunderstanding of my intentions) and get aggressive without a leash to control them.

If I remember her OP, she has a small child that they would like to be able to play or be in their front yard with without the fear of a dog harming their child. I have 2 DC and 2 big dogs, BUT I hate when people just assume their dogs will never do anything to harm a child (or anyone for that matter). He should not be walking his dog off leash and that is that.

OP - I'm sorry you're dealing with this, but I'm glad it's not my DH. He would have started to roll out of the driveway and tapped the guy or at least called the police immediately.

I think passersby have a right to expect not to be jumped on, muddied, or slobbered on in addition to their right not to be bitten. So even non-aggressive dogs can still be offensive to people who just don't want to be touched by them. The leash is the only way an owner can assure others that they won't have to have any unwanted physical contact with an animal in a "people" space.

wow, what a horrible situation. OP, the neighbor seems unhinged. i am paranoid, but this is the type of guy who ends up in the newspaper. please tell your husband to not engage with him.

people are such psychos - the laws/ordinances are there for a reason.

OP here. Yep the issue is the kid. My DH had Well behaved dog who turned one day on a neighbor kid and the put her down, so I think that shapes his feelings about it. There are a LOT of kids in the neighborhood and a lot of dogs. The leash laws are there so we can all coexist without incident. There are very awesome dog parks nearby.

Anyway, dude is crazy and we are kweeping our distance.

Correction...they didn't put her down but gave her to a shelter. His parents told him she went to "live on a farm"...I thought it was a euphemism.

I don't see assault, but I definitely see trespassing. That's the call to the police I would make -- not about the dogs, but about the man trespassing on your property and refusing to move.

Does this guy clean up after his dogs? If not, you should collect some of their excrement, put it in a paper bag, set it on his doorstep, light it on fire, and then ring the doorbell.

I feel for you op, we were at the park when DS ran up to a dog off leash at the playground. The owner had the nerve to walk up and tell me my son who is 2 really shouldn't walk up to strange dogs. It was standing next to him at the slide-again-off leash. What did she expect kids at the park to do??

Eh, it was the parking lot in front of our townhouse, not our property. Lol about the flaming poop...in my husband's dreams.
