| 18:24 here. I seconded the suggestion of McLean b/c op said that traditional worksheets didn't work for her daughter and that she was a tactile learner. That is McLean. They adapt to the child's learning style. Classes are small and breakout groups for math and reading are even smaller. There are kids in my dd's class who are gifted. But they need the support McLean provides. |

New poster here reenforcing the recommendation of McLean. They identify each child's best approach to learning and tailor their approach accordingly. Very small classes. Kids with OP's daughter's profile do very well there. OP wrote that it was the pen and paper approach of traditional schools that wasn't working and this is where McLean would be great. PLus the teachers have very specific expertise with this kind of student.
Lowell and Green Acres are not terribly structured and a child like this can get lost. Sheridan has larger classes. St. Patrick's is a good recommendation although I think McLean sounds like a better fit. |

| I've seen some kids referred for ADD testing because the teachers noted that they seem distracted, "lost" , unable to follow directions in a dual language immersion program that also used a progressive curriculum. Don't know what school your DC attends , but perhaps the problem is not that your child actually has ADD, but simply that the curriculum is too demanding in terms of the amount of integration required to stay on point minute by minute in the classroom. |
What are you talking about? Nowhere does she mention "dual language immersion" or "progressive". Her DD attends a traditional school. |
+++1. Unless a private school specializes in special-needs kids, you will do far, far worse in a private than in a good public. Private school teachers are not required to know anything about teaching; there is effectively no regulation or standard that applies. Same goes for gifted kids; private schools' only answer, typically, is "skip a grade" which ignores subject-strength differentiation, and also ignores age-level development. |

| She has ADD, no behavioral or LD so the best she'll get at a public is a 504 accommodation plus the large class sizes. Easy to get lost in a public with that profile. |

I recommend Grace Episcopal Day School (www.geds.org) in Kensington. It's quite a small school (trying to re-grow) and the current 2nd grade (rising 3rd grade) class is particularly small (e.g. 8-10 kids). It's a fun group, very active, more boys than girls. The rising 4th grade class is a bit bigger (12-15 total) and full of really sweet kids.
The academic approach is "traditional," and the kids move from class to class a fair amount (separate art, music, PE, Spanish classes) and have 2 recesses/day (mid-morning and after lunch). All the teachers are wonderful, and there is a definite focus on social-emotional growth as well as the opportunity for individualized academics. My 2 kids couldn't be more different, and Grace has been great for both of them. It is not a school "for" kids with learning disabilities, but they have been very flexible with us (my son has a speech/language tutor come into the school). +++1 Bullis Lower School might be just the fit. We love it because our ds is always moving or exploring. The classes have kids making things, going places, acting out, hypothesizing and testing. Fourth grade just did estimation olympics, guessing, meauring, moving. Not sure if anyone noticed the math. Classes are small. Teachers strong and invested. |
