CANADIAN HERE... In Canada the two official languages are English and French. Now that I live in US, I am happy to learn yet another language, Spanish... It's a shame OP, that you are so close minded you would think learning another language is a bad thing. TRAVEL THE WORLD, and stop being so ignorant. I can't understand why you would think having another language is a bad thing? This is an exclusively American problem, you people don't travel and live in your own little world. In other countries it's actually normal to learn foreign languages.

Canadian again.. Oh and btw OP you are a moron, because the reason we speak French in Canada is because the french arrived first. So technically, we speak English because of all the British "illegals".

I am so annoyed I am posting again... This link is for the OP, a list of countries who have English as an 'official' language. If you traveled and saw the world, you wouldn't make such stupid statements.

OP, I'll bite.

95 percent of the world's markets are outside the USA.

Why is so important for you to have a single language? Seems like a recipe for economic disaster.

Or, do you just hate the wetbacks?

Did the french speakers sneak in illegally Or were they part of the legal residents

Yesterday I was in a meeting where a participant regretfully mentioned that she speaks fluent Italian, but her daughter doesn't because she didn't take the time to teach her. Speaking more than one language offers so many cognitive and social benefits! DCUM posters, if you speak more than one language, please teach those languages to your children.

I agree the US should return to its native language.

Which is Navajo, I believe.

I think that is self-evident from the post.

Why change? Soon 1/4 of our country is going to be from spanish speaking countries. It's the dominant language in our hemisphere. So should we make all of these changes, just because you are too weak minded to learn a language? I don't see why we should dumb down our society for you.

How did illegals ruin their countries? I thought it was political leaders, corporations and drug lords that do the destruction. Illegals are just looking for a place to work and live.

This is not true, I lived in Brusels and Belgium is bi-lingual, Flemish (Dutch) and French. To work for the Belgian government, you must speak both languages fluently.

Congress needs to pass legislation that in order to become a US citizen or a legal resident, you must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.

I am just so disappointed this is even being debated. Canadian again... I grew up speaking English and French, and because of that is it soooo easy for me to learn languages. I speak 5, but 7 if you count "basic" understanding. When I travel to Europe I can speak the language and be understood. I feel sad for you OP,that you are so close minded.
