frustrating grocery store experience

I wouldn't. Cashier is a shitty job, and I wouldn't want to run the risk of getting her fired around the holidays. I don't want that on my karma.

Cashiers are typically union. They don't just get fired for not being properly trained.

Depends on the store. Whole Foods and Harris Teeter are non-union.

OP here. It was a Giant.. does that mean she is union?

And to the poster who talked about the difference between food stamps and WIC, it was actually WIC. I will say though that the lady knew EXACTLY what she could use and how to use it, and was actually giving the clerk instructions the whole time about how to ring it up before the manager had to get involved. This was definitely not a situation where the customer was at fault in any way. Although I don't think most of the people in the line realized that.. when you see the vouchers, you automatically think "ugh.. this is going to take forever!"

Yes I'm pretty sure the Giant workers are union.

The cashier may have been new. I always assume this if I get someone who seems like they don't know what they're doing. If the problem is/was corrected, no harm.

Not really sure what the food stamp/WIC lady had to do with any of this?

Giant is 100% union and a strong union at that.

What if she was new? What if she was just having a bad day? You are perfect at your job all the time and have never srewed up and got flustered? When I opened this thread I was not expecting this. I don't understand why you are making such a huge deal about it? You have nothing better to talk about?

I wouldn't say anything. She's probably new and learning the ropes. She has a job and is trying, cut her a break. The manager will be able to tell from your receipt who the cashier was, no need to mention anything else.

It might have been the cashier's first time alone in checking out and it was too much. My guess is that the store didn't give her proper training. I would get my money back because there is no reason why you should pay for something you didn't get. Give the girl a break and say hello and smile next time you see her. If she looks harried, just tell her to take her time and if you have to vomit, ask for a double bklastic bag. Happy holidays to you.

If the OP doesn't say anything how is the cashier going to be properly trained? The cashier isn't "learning the ropes". She's learning an intense & complicated computer system that she obviously needs more training on. Why piss off customers as opposed to getting the cashier the help she needs to work more efficiently. If you go in as a concerned customer the manager is going to help the cashier, not reprimand her.

This is coming from something in HR. You people are really not thinking sometimes, Managers are not monsters, they are helpful people.

What in the world does this have to do with being overcharged? The cashiers job is to ring up grocery items. She should be able to do it without over charging people regardless of whether or not she's having a good day.

And what is the big deal? Money, that is the big deal. $5 is a lot of money to some people, why wouldn't OP want to get her money back. Why shouldn't she go get it back from Giant and why should Giant get to keep it because the cashier was having a bad day, please explain?

I would say something. This isn't just about a slow cashier or a cashier with a bad attitude. The cashier did her job incorrectly and overcharged OP, even after OP pointed out the mistake to the cashier.

And I am a low-wage-earning peasant, so I'm not saying this from atop my pile of $250,000 per year.

I went through a line at Whole Foods where the cashier told us it was his first day on the job (working the register alone). He was a little slower than one of the more experienced cashiers, but he knew what he was doing and didn't make any mistakes.

I definitely think the OP should say something. being overcharged and incorrectly charged is a BIG deal. Better for this cashier to get the training she needs now, or to discover that perhaps this isn't the right job for her, than for the store to get a lot of complaints/lose customers over someone who is not competent.

So what's frustrating about this? You were overcharged. It was a mistake. Take the crap back and get a refund. Would you feel good about yourself telling the manager she sucked so bad and held up the line bla, bla. Being a cashier probably sucks so what's the big deal?
